CUPERTINO, United States | August 31, 2026 —
Tim Cook’s final day as Apple CEO has arrived. After more than 15 years at the helm of one of the world’s most influential technology companies, Cook will hand the chief executive role to longtime Apple hardware executive John Ternus on September 1, 2026.
Cook, however, is not leaving Apple.
He will become Executive Chairman of Apple’s Board of Directors, giving him an continuing role at the company while Ternus assumes responsibility for day-to-day leadership.
The transition marks one of Apple’s biggest leadership changes since Cook succeeded co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011.
For Apple customers, investors and the wider technology industry, the change comes at a particularly important moment. Apple is preparing for a major September 9 product event, while artificial intelligence, new iPhones, advanced Apple silicon and increasingly expensive hardware are reshaping the company’s next growth cycle.
Who Is John Ternus, Apple’s New CEO?
John Ternus has spent years at the centre of Apple’s hardware strategy.
Before being selected as the company’s next chief executive, he served as Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, overseeing engineering work across major product categories.
Ternus has been closely involved with Apple products ranging from the Mac and iPad to iPhone and Apple Watch.
Apple’s board unanimously approved the leadership transition as part of what the company described as a long-term succession-planning process.
Ternus will also join Apple’s board of directors from September 1.
His appointment signals that Apple is placing a hardware engineer with deep product-development experience at the centre of its next chapter.
Tim Cook Is Not Retiring From Apple
The biggest misconception surrounding the transition is that Tim Cook is leaving the company completely.
He is not.
Cook will become Executive Chairman, a position that keeps him closely connected with Apple after giving up the CEO title.
Apple has said Cook will continue assisting the company in selected areas, including engagement with policymakers around the world.
That could prove especially important as Apple faces regulatory pressure in the United States, Europe and other major markets.
The arrangement also gives Ternus access to Cook’s experience during a period when Apple is simultaneously managing product transitions, artificial-intelligence competition, supply-chain pressures and global regulation.

Tim Cook’s 15-Year Apple Era
Cook became Apple CEO in August 2011 after previously serving as the company’s chief operating officer.
His tenure transformed Apple far beyond the iPhone.
Under Cook, Apple expanded aggressively into services and introduced or scaled major products and platforms including Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple silicon-powered Macs, subscription services and the Vision Pro platform.
Apple also became one of the world’s most valuable publicly traded companies during his leadership.
Yet Cook’s legacy is not simply about market value.
He became known for Apple’s highly disciplined supply chain, huge global manufacturing network, expansion of recurring services revenue and a tighter ecosystem connecting hardware, software and services.
Now the challenge passes to John Ternus.
Why John Ternus Takes Over at a Critical Moment
Ternus is inheriting Apple at a time when the technology landscape is changing rapidly.
Generative AI has become one of the most important competitive battlegrounds across consumer technology.
Apple has expanded Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, while rivals continue investing enormous sums in AI models, cloud infrastructure and new intelligent devices.
At the same time, consumers are becoming increasingly sensitive to smartphone and computer prices.
That means Apple must persuade buyers that new hardware provides enough improvement to justify premium pricing.

First Big Test: Apple Event on September 9
John Ternus will not have much time to settle into the CEO chair.
Apple has scheduled a special event for September 9 at 10:30 PM IST, only eight days after he officially becomes chief executive.
The event is expected to become the first major product showcase of the Ternus era.
Apple itself has confirmed the September 9 event, although the company has not officially detailed every product that will be unveiled.
That distinction matters.
Reports and market expectations are pointing toward the next-generation iPhone lineup and other devices, but unannounced specifications should not be treated as confirmed until Apple reveals them.
For Ternus, the event could provide an immediate opportunity to establish his public leadership style.
What Could Change Under John Ternus?
A CEO transition does not necessarily mean Apple’s strategy will suddenly change on September 1.
Large technology companies operate through multi-year product roadmaps, and many devices that will launch under Ternus were developed while Cook remained CEO.
Still, leadership eventually influences priorities.
Three areas will be watched especially closely:
Artificial Intelligence: Apple needs to show that its AI strategy can compete while remaining deeply integrated with its hardware ecosystem.
Hardware Innovation: Foldable devices, thinner products, advanced displays and next-generation Apple silicon could shape the coming years.
Pricing: Rising component and memory costs are putting pressure on electronics prices globally.
The balance between innovation and affordability could become one of Ternus’ biggest challenges.
What Tim Cook’s New Role Means
Executive Chairman is not a ceremonial disappearance from Apple.
Cook will remain positioned close to the company’s board and strategic leadership.
His continued involvement could create a relatively smooth succession compared with a complete leadership break.
Apple will therefore enter September with two highly influential figures at the top: Ternus running the company as CEO and Cook remaining involved as Executive Chairman.
Arthur Levinson, who served as Apple’s non-executive chairman for 15 years, will become the company’s Lead Independent Director from September 1.
A Rare Leadership Change at Apple
Apple does not change chief executives often.
Steve Jobs returned to lead the company in the late 1990s and helped launch the product era that eventually produced the iPhone.
Cook then led Apple through the following 15 years of expansion.
John Ternus becomes the next person entrusted with that responsibility.
The immediate question is not whether Apple changes overnight.
It is whether Ternus can guide the company through the next major shift in consumer technology — particularly artificial intelligence — while maintaining the product quality, customer loyalty and profitability that defined the Cook era.
On September 1, 2026, Apple’s CEO title changes hands.
Tim Cook’s influence, however, will remain.
