SEBI social media investment ads now face direct registration checks across Google and Meta. India’s market regulator has linked advertising access to verified regulatory records.
As a result, unregistered promoters face greater barriers when advertising securities or investment services online. The initiative targets misleading promotions, impersonation attempts, and fraudulent investment schemes.
How SEBI’s Advertising Verification System Works
SEBI began formalizing the verification mechanism through its March 2025 social media advertising advisory.
Registered intermediaries must use mobile numbers and email addresses recorded with the regulator. Therefore, participating platforms can compare advertiser credentials with SEBI’s registration records.
This process reduces dependence on self-declared credentials. Moreover, it prevents unauthorized promoters from claiming regulatory status without verification.
Earlier reports described SEBI’s discussions with Google as ongoing. However, SEBI’s March 2026 update confirmed that its API-based framework covers Google and Meta.
Accordingly, the latest official position confirms implementation across both major advertising platforms.
How SEBI Verification Differs From Google’s Existing Policy
Google already operates a broader financial services verification policy for India. That process requires advertisers to prove authorization, licensing, or eligibility for an exemption.
However, SEBI’s framework establishes a direct connection with the regulator’s records.
| Verification feature | Google’s general policy | SEBI-linked framework |
|---|---|---|
| Validation basis | Documents and authorization evidence | SEBI registration records |
| Primary purpose | Financial advertising compliance | Securities-market advertiser authentication |
| Identity check | Advertiser-submitted information | Registered contact details |
| Main outcome | Google advertising eligibility | Confirmation of SEBI-regulated status |
Therefore, the two systems serve related purposes through different verification methods.
Verified Labels Reach Google Play Store
Separately, SEBI and Google introduced a verified label for registered stockbroker applications. The label helps investors distinguish genuine applications from fraudulent copies.
By March 2026, more than 600 stockbroker applications displayed the verification label. Moreover, SEBI plans to extend the initiative to other regulated intermediaries.
The badge confirms an application’s connection with a registered entity. However, it does not guarantee investment performance or validate every recommendation.
Investors should still review fees, risks, and regulatory disclosures before transferring money.
Parliamentary Panel Supports Stronger Finfluencer Checks
A parliamentary standing committee has also encouraged coordination between SEBI and social media platforms.
The committee recommended mechanisms that distinguish authorized financial influencers from unregistered promoters. Furthermore, it supported visible verification marks for regulated financial content providers.
Such labels could help users identify whether an adviser operates within SEBI’s regulatory framework. Nevertheless, registration alone cannot make every investment claim reliable.
Promoters promising guaranteed or unusually high returns should still face careful scrutiny.
SEBI Expands AI-Powered Monitoring
Meanwhile, SEBI has expanded technology-driven monitoring through Project SUDARSAN. The artificial intelligence platform identifies suspicious financial content and potential scam networks.
SEBI’s 2025–26 Annual Report details its growing collaboration with digital platforms.
The regulator reported escalating more than 130,000 misleading content items for takedown. Additionally, app stores removed around 66 suspected fake trading applications after referrals.
Consequently, suspicious promotions can face faster identification and removal. Still, automated monitoring cannot detect every fraudulent advertisement immediately.
What Investors Should Check Before Acting
Investors should complete independent verification before following online financial advice.
- Check the advertiser through SEBI’s recognized intermediaries database.
- Compare the displayed registration number with SEBI’s official record.
- Avoid advertisements promising guaranteed, instant, or unusually high returns.
- Never transfer investment money into an individual’s personal account.
- Confirm payment credentials through the official SEBI Check service.
- Report suspicious profiles, groups, advertisements, or trading applications promptly.
What the New Framework Means
The verification system strengthens accountability across India’s digital investment advertising market. Furthermore, it gives platforms a reliable method for authenticating regulated advertisers.
Google and Meta verification can reduce unauthorized advertising. Likewise, Play Store labels can help investors avoid fraudulent application downloads.
However, the measures cannot eliminate every investment scam. Therefore, investor awareness remains essential alongside platform enforcement and regulatory monitoring.
Ultimately, SEBI’s approach combines verified identities, artificial intelligence, platform cooperation, and investor education. This framework creates stronger barriers against misleading financial promotions without restricting legitimate market communication.
