NEW DELHI, India | September 18, 2026 —
Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned 76 on September 17, and the day was marked by large public programmes across several states — from millions of glowing diyas and blood-donation camps to plantation drives, bike yatras and service campaigns.
The biggest numbers came from Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Gujarat.
Across Madhya Pradesh, organisers reported that 3.55 crore diyas were lit at the same time. Ujjain alone accounted for 33.27 lakh lamps along the Kshipra riverfront and Mahakal Lok.
In Bhubaneswar, a mega blood-donation camp collected 8,810 units of blood in a single day at one location. A World Book of Records representative presented a certificate recognising the achievement.
Gujarat, meanwhile, launched a campaign involving 76,000 kitchen-garden saplings, using PM Modi’s age as the central theme of the programme.
Together, the events turned September 17 into much more than a conventional birthday celebration.
3.55 Crore Diyas Light Up Madhya Pradesh
The most striking visual of the night came from Madhya Pradesh.
At a fixed time in the evening, lamps were lit across hundreds of locations in the state.
The total reported figure reached 3.55 crore diyas.
Ujjain became the centre of the event.
Along the Kshipra river, around Mahakal Lok and at other major locations, 33.27 lakh lamps were illuminated together. Officials described the Ujjain event as a world-record achievement. Published reports carrying the claim attribute it to state officials and organisers.
The sight of millions of lamps stretching across Ujjain quickly became one of the most widely discussed images from the Prime Minister’s birthday programmes.
Bhubaneswar Creates a Blood-Donation Record
Odisha produced one of the clearest certified achievements of the day.
The BJP Yuva Morcha organised a mega blood-donation camp at the IDCO Exhibition Ground in Bhubaneswar.
By the end of the programme, 8,810 units of blood had been collected at a single location through one camp and organisation.
A representative of the World Book of Records presented a certificate recognising the achievement.
The programme was attended by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and other state leaders.
While many birthday events were symbolic, the Bhubaneswar programme created a medical resource that can directly support patients needing blood.
That made it one of the day’s most notable service initiatives.
Gujarat Marks 76 Years With 76,000 Saplings
Gujarat chose a different way to connect the Prime Minister’s age with the celebrations.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the Harit Ghar – Swasth Samaj campaign in Ahmedabad.
Its central target: 76,000 kitchen-garden saplings.
The idea was simple.
One thousand saplings for every year of PM Modi’s age.
The campaign encouraged families to grow vegetables and plants at home, connecting the birthday programme with household gardening and environmental awareness.
Delhi’s Kartavya Path Glows With 1.25 Lakh Diyas
The national capital also witnessed a large Deepotsav-style programme.
Around 1.25 lakh diyas were lit at Kartavya Path under the Ashirwad Ka Diya initiative. Similar lamp-lighting events were organised in several other cities.
PM Modi later acknowledged the initiative and said the gesture had deeply touched him.
In an official message, he thanked people across the country for their wishes, affection and blessings and also appreciated those taking part in service activities.
Vadnagar and Varanasi Connected by a Bike Yatra
PM Modi’s birthplace Vadnagar and his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi also became part of the birthday programme.
A bike yatra was flagged off from Vadnagar, with the planned route passing through multiple states, districts and villages before reaching Varanasi.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah participated in events at Vadnagar, including a Maha Aarti at Sharmishtha Lake.
The programme also connects with another political milestone approaching on October 7 — 25 years since Narendra Modi first became Gujarat chief minister in 2001.
Why October 7 Is Important This Year
The September 17 programmes are not designed to end with the birthday.
The BJP has linked them with a wider Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, involving public-service activities over the following weeks.
October 7 carries special significance because Narendra Modi became Gujarat chief minister on October 7, 2001.
That means October 7, 2026 marks 25 years since he first became the head of a government.
The birthday therefore also serves as the beginning of a longer political and organisational campaign.
PM Modi Spends Part of Birthday at SEMICON India 2026
While birthday programmes were taking place around the country, PM Modi’s official schedule remained focused on government engagements.
He inaugurated SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi on September 17. The three-day conference runs from September 17 to September 19 and focuses on India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
The Prime Minister also participated virtually in another government programme linked to West Bengal, according to the PMO’s official schedule.
That created an unusual contrast during the day.
Outside government venues, supporters and party organisations were lighting lamps, donating blood and planting saplings.
Inside official programmes, the focus remained on technology, industry and welfare initiatives.
Birthday Wishes Come From Government and Opposition
Birthday greetings also crossed party lines.
Leaders from the government, BJP and opposition parties publicly wished PM Modi on September 17.
Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were among those who conveyed birthday wishes, while BJP leaders highlighted the Prime Minister’s political journey and years in public office.
PM Modi later thanked people for the messages and said the wishes gave him renewed strength to serve.
