NEW DELHI, India | October 7, 2026 — A visit to Delhi’s Sri Vinayaka Mandir marked a significant anniversary for Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday. PM Modi’s 25 years as head of government span his journey from taking charge as Gujarat chief minister on October 7, 2001, to serving three consecutive terms as India’s prime minister.
PM Modi offered prayers at the temple as congratulatory messages arrived from Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
The occasion brings together a personal religious observance and a political milestone. However, the anniversary refers specifically to his leadership of governments at the state and national levels. His public and political activities began before he became chief minister.
From Gujarat in 2001 to the Prime Minister’s Office
October 7 holds significance because PM Modi assumed office as Gujarat chief minister on that date in 2001. He subsequently led the state until his move to national office in 2014.
He began his first term as prime minister in 2014 and returned for a second term in 2019. On June 9, 2024, he took the oath for a third consecutive term.
Consequently, the 25-year period combines two distinct phases of executive responsibility: leadership of Gujarat’s state government and leadership of the Union government.
The anniversary does not mean that PM Modi has served as prime minister for 25 years. Rather, it measures the period since he first became the head of a government.
Temple Visit Marks the Morning’s Observance
PM Modi visited Sri Vinayaka Mandir in Delhi and offered prayers on Wednesday morning.
The temple visit formed part of the day’s observances as political leaders acknowledged the anniversary. Separately, a morning report listed a planned address at the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Sabha–Seva Jyoti Yatra in the capital.
At the time of this update, that address remained a scheduled event. This report therefore does not attribute remarks to PM Modi from the forthcoming program.
Vice President Highlights Inclusive Development
Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan congratulated PM Modi and linked the anniversary to his approach to public service.
In his message, Radhakrishnan praised what he described as a nationwide commitment to inclusive development. He also highlighted connectivity, digital advancement and expanding opportunities.
Additionally, the vice president wished PM Modi good health and strength as he continued working toward the goal of a developed India by 2047.
These statements represent Radhakrishnan’s assessment of the prime minister’s leadership.
Yogi Adityanath Emphasizes National Service
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also extended his congratulations.
He described PM Modi’s leadership through the themes of public service, determination and national commitment. Furthermore, he said the prime minister’s life offered inspiration for building a developed, self-reliant and strong India.
Adityanath presented the anniversary as an occasion to recognize sustained service. His message placed particular emphasis on the connection between public responsibilities and national aspirations.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan Praises the Journey
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan traced the milestone back to October 7, 2001.
He praised PM Modi’s work, patience and enthusiasm, while describing the opportunity to serve alongside him as a privilege. Chouhan also offered wishes for his health and continued work in public welfare.
Like the other congratulatory messages, his remarks reflected a political colleague’s tribute to the prime minister.
Union Cabinet Recognizes the Anniversary
The Union Cabinet adopted a resolution on October 6 congratulating PM Modi on completing 25 years of continuous leadership as head of government.
The official announcement framed the anniversary around his tenure as Gujarat chief minister and his subsequent service as prime minister. Meanwhile, the Cabinet’s tribute placed the milestone within its account of his leadership and governance.
For readers, the essential timeline remains clear: Gujarat chief minister from 2001, prime minister from 2014, and a third consecutive prime ministerial term beginning in 2024.
That distinction explains the significance of October 7, 2026, while keeping the anniversary separate from the longer history of PM Modi’s public life.
