Joshimath, Chamoli (Uttarakhand), October 30, 2026: A helicopter operated by Trans Bharat Aviation, travelling from Badrinath Dham to Dehradun’s Sahastradhara helipad, has crashed near Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. Six people, including the pilot and five passengers, were on board. Their condition remains unconfirmed as rescue teams continue operations in the difficult mountainous terrain.

The incident occurred near Chai (also reported as Chaien) village, close to Joshimath and the JP Power House area. The aircraft reportedly lost communication while flying over the Joshimath valley. Its tracking signal also disappeared, prompting authorities to launch an extensive search operation.

What Happened to the Trans Bharat Aviation Helicopter?

According to preliminary information, the helicopter departed from Badrinath at approximately 1:12–1:14 PM on Friday, October 30, and was heading towards Sahastradhara in Dehradun.

The aircraft lost contact while flying over the Joshimath valley. Its last reported location was in the mountainous area near Chai village, close to the Army camp and Hathi Parvat.

Reports of smoke rising near the village added to concerns that the helicopter may have crashed into the hillside. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami subsequently confirmed receiving information about a helicopter crash near Chai village.

However, the immediate priority for the authorities remains locating the aircraft, reaching the site and determining the condition of everyone on board.

Six People Were on Board

Preliminary information identifies one pilot and five male passengers aboard the helicopter.

Passengers

  • H.S. Natraja

Authorities have not yet established the condition of the six occupants. Their names and the number of people aboard have been reported, but confirmed information about casualties and injuries is awaited.

Army, SDRF and Police Join Rescue Operation

The incident triggered an emergency response involving multiple agencies. Teams from the district administration, Uttarakhand Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were mobilised towards the suspected crash location.

Authorities have also used aerial surveillance and drones to help locate the helicopter. The difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions have complicated the search operation.

The mountainous region around Joshimath presents significant challenges for rescue teams, particularly when visibility is poor and access to suspected crash locations is limited.

The immediate objectives are to establish the exact crash location, reach the occupants and arrange medical assistance wherever required.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami Monitors Situation

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed concern over the incident in a post on social media.

He said he had received information about the unfortunate helicopter crash near Chai village, close to Joshimath. According to the Chief Minister, the district administration, Disaster Management Department and SDRF were conducting a joint rescue operation.

Dhami said he was continuously monitoring developments and had instructed officials to airlift seriously injured people to higher medical centres without delay.

He also expressed hope and prayed for the safe return of everyone aboard the helicopter.

Why Is the Rescue Operation Challenging?

The suspected crash site lies in a mountainous region of Chamoli district, where difficult terrain and changing weather can make emergency operations particularly complicated.

The helicopter was operating on the Badrinath–Dehradun route, which crosses the Himalayan landscape. Poor visibility, rain, snowfall and cloud cover have been reported in the area.

Although adverse weather has emerged as a major concern during the search, authorities have not established the cause of the incident. Any conclusion about weather, technical failure or another contributing factor would be premature until the appropriate investigation is completed.

What Happens Next?

The immediate focus is on locating the aircraft and confirming the condition of the pilot and five passengers. Rescue agencies are working to reach the suspected crash site and provide emergency medical assistance.

Officials are also expected to establish the precise sequence of events, including when communication was lost and what happened during the helicopter’s final moments.

The circumstances of the incident and its possible cause will need to be examined by the relevant aviation authorities.

INVC NEWS will continue to follow developments from Joshimath. The identities of those aboard have been reported, but their condition and the confirmed casualty figures remain subject to official updates.
