JNU ICSSR Ethanol Study

A new research study conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) with support from the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) suggests that expanding the use of ethanol-based fuel in India’s automobile sector could significantly strengthen the country’s energy security, increase farmers’ income, and reduce reliance on imported crude oil.

The study also highlights growing industry support for the Make in India initiative and calls for greater transparency in vehicle safety, fuel compatibility, and consumer awareness as India’s automotive sector undergoes rapid transformation.

Research Highlights Ethanol’s Economic Potential

The research was carried out by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee School of Management and Entrepreneurship at JNU under the leadership of Associate Professor Dr. Brajesh Kumar Tiwari, with financial support from the ICSSR.

The study examined the impact of the Make in India initiative on the growth of India’s automobile industry. More than 300 participants from the Delhi-NCR automobile ecosystem—including industry professionals, suppliers, consumers, and other stakeholders—were surveyed.

According to the findings, India’s automotive industry is steadily moving toward:

  • Ethanol-based fuels
  • Electric vehicles (EVs)
  • Hybrid technologies
  • Improved vehicle safety standards

Researchers noted that ethanol could play a central role in India’s transition toward cleaner and more self-reliant transportation.

Ethanol Could Create New Income Opportunities for Farmers

According to Dr. Brajesh Kumar Tiwari, expanding ethanol production from agricultural feedstocks such as sugarcane, maize (corn), and other crops could generate additional income opportunities for farmers while strengthening the rural economy.

The study suggests that increased demand for agricultural raw materials used in ethanol production may:

  • Improve farmers’ earnings.
  • Support rural employment.
  • Encourage agricultural diversification.
  • Contribute to India’s long-term energy security.

Researchers also noted that replacing a portion of imported fossil fuels with domestically produced ethanol could help reduce India’s dependence on crude oil imports.

Support for Make in India Remains Strong

The survey found broad support for the government’s Make in India initiative within the automobile sector.

Key findings include:

  • 85.6% of respondents supported the Make in India initiative in the automobile industry.
  • 59.7% expressed agreement or strong agreement with the initiative overall.
  • 35.8% remained neutral.
  • Only 4.6% expressed disagreement or strong disagreement.

The researchers said these findings indicate strong confidence in India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Consumers Want Greater Transparency

The study also emphasized the importance of improving consumer awareness about Indian-made vehicles.

According to the survey:

  • 78% of respondents supported providing consumers with clearer information about vehicle features.

Researchers recommended greater transparency regarding:

  • Vehicle safety standards
  • Bharat NCAP safety ratings
  • Crash-test performance
  • Number of airbags
  • Fuel efficiency
  • Maintenance costs
  • Environmental performance

They argued that better-informed consumers would be more confident when purchasing vehicles manufactured in India.

Clear Information Needed on Ethanol-Blended Fuels

The study also found that consumers want more information before adopting ethanol-blended fuels.

Respondents called for clearer guidance on:

  • Vehicle compatibility with ethanol blends
  • Fuel economy (mileage)
  • Long-term maintenance costs
  • Engine performance
  • Long-term durability

Researchers suggested that transparent communication from automakers and policymakers would help improve consumer confidence as ethanol usage expands across the country.

India’s Auto Sector Is Undergoing Rapid Transformation

The research concludes that India’s automobile industry is entering a period of significant technological change.

Growing adoption of:

  • Electric vehicles
  • Hybrid vehicles
  • Ethanol-based fuels
  • Advanced safety technologies

is expected to reshape the sector while supporting broader national goals related to energy independence, environmental sustainability, and domestic manufacturing.

The study suggests that combining cleaner fuel technologies with stronger consumer awareness could further accelerate the growth of India’s automotive ecosystem.
