Amarnath Yatra Suspended
The Amarnath Yatra has been temporarily suspended from Sunday, July 19, after authorities halted the movement of pilgrims from both the Baltal and Nunwan/Chandanwari (Pahalgam) base camps due to forecasts of heavy rainfall, landslides, and flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir.
The precautionary decision was announced by Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Anshul Garg, following a weather advisory issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of adverse weather conditions across the pilgrimage route over the coming days.
The suspension has been imposed to ensure the safety of thousands of devotees traveling to the sacred Amarnath Cave Shrine.
Pilgrims Not Allowed to Proceed Beyond Base Camps
According to the administration, no pilgrims will be permitted to proceed toward the holy cave from either the Baltal or Nunwan/Chandanwari (Pahalgam) base camps beginning July 19.
Officials said the decision was taken solely as a preventive measure after meteorologists forecast heavy rainfall, raising the risk of landslides, rockfalls, and flash flooding along the mountainous trekking routes.
Authorities emphasized that public safety remains the highest priority during the annual pilgrimage.
Journey to Resume After Safety Review
Administrative officials stated that the suspension is temporary and will remain in effect until weather conditions improve.
The pilgrimage will resume only after:
- Weather conditions become favorable.
- A comprehensive safety assessment of the trekking routes is completed.
- Authorities confirm that both pilgrimage routes are safe for travel.
Fresh updates regarding the resumption of the yatra will be issued through official government channels.
Administration Urges Pilgrims to Follow Official Advisories
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has appealed to all pilgrims to remain patient and strictly follow official instructions.
Officials advised devotees to avoid relying on unverified social media reports and instead monitor announcements issued by the administration regarding weather conditions and the status of the pilgrimage.
Authorities also requested pilgrims to cooperate with security personnel and emergency teams deployed along the route.
More Than 370,000 Pilgrims Have Visited the Shrine
Despite the temporary suspension, this year’s Amarnath Yatra has witnessed a strong turnout.
According to official figures, more than 370,000 pilgrims have already visited the holy Amarnath Cave Shrine and offered prayers to Baba Barfani during the ongoing pilgrimage.
The annual yatra remains one of India’s most significant Hindu pilgrimages, attracting devotees from across the country and abroad.
