NEW DELHI, India | September 21, 2026 — The familiar boxy shape will stay, the rugged attitude is not going anywhere and the Thar name will remain unmistakable. But when Mahindra pulls the covers off the updated three-door Thar on September 22, almost everything around that familiar personality could feel considerably more modern.

The Mahindra Thar facelift is set to make its India debut on Tuesday with fresh exterior styling, a more premium cabin and a longer equipment list. Mahindra’s teasers have already revealed important visual changes, while test vehicles and pre-launch reports indicate that the three-door SUV could borrow several ideas from the larger Thar Roxx.

That is important because the Thar no longer competes only on rugged looks and off-road ability. Buyers spending this kind of money increasingly expect LED lighting, digital displays, better cameras, connected convenience features and a cabin that feels premium enough for everyday use.

Mahindra now appears ready to address exactly that.

1. Thar’s Face Is Finally Getting a More Modern Look

The easiest change to spot will be at the front.

Mahindra’s teaser points to a redesigned front fascia, while reports indicate that the facelift will receive projector LED headlamps with C-shaped LED daytime running lights, replacing the more traditional lighting arrangement seen on the outgoing version.

The grille is also being reworked, with a new pattern giving the Thar a fresher appearance without sacrificing the upright proportions that have become central to its identity. Revised bumpers and redesigned alloy wheels are also expected.

At the rear, updated tail lamps with C-shaped lighting elements should help connect the design more closely with the Thar Roxx.

Mahindra therefore appears to be following a careful formula: modernise the details without making the Thar look like a different vehicle.

For a model whose visual identity is one of its strongest selling points, that is probably the safest approach.

2. Thar Roxx Influence Could Be Seen Across the Design

The five-door Thar Roxx changed expectations around what a Thar-branded vehicle could offer.

It retained the rugged image but added considerably more technology and comfort.

Now some of that influence appears ready to reach the three-door model.

Spy images and teasers suggest the facelift could pick up several Roxx-inspired styling touches, particularly around the lighting, grille and wheels. However, the shorter three-door proportions and removable-roof lifestyle character are expected to remain intact.

That distinction matters.

The three-door Thar attracts buyers partly because it looks compact, upright and purpose-built. Turning it into a smaller Roxx would risk diluting that appeal.

Instead, Mahindra seems to be giving the older design a more contemporary finish.

3. Cabin Could Finally Feel More Premium

The exterior may attract the first glance, but the interior could deliver the more meaningful improvement.

The current Thar already received several upgrades in its previous update, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen, rear AC vents, rear-view camera and rear wiper and washer.

The new facelift is expected to go further.

Mahindra could introduce refreshed trim materials, leatherette upholstery on selected variants and a more premium-looking steering wheel treatment. The basic dashboard architecture is expected to remain familiar, including the circular air vents and physical controls.

That would be a sensible move.

Owners who genuinely take their Thars off-road may appreciate physical buttons more than an entirely touchscreen-dependent cabin, while upgraded materials can still make the interior feel more expensive.

The facelift therefore appears to focus on refinement rather than reinvention.

4. 360-Degree Camera, Ventilated Seats and Digital Display Could Change Daily Life

This could become the most important part of the entire update.

Reports suggest Mahindra may use the facelift to fill several equipment gaps that have become increasingly noticeable as rivals and even lower-priced SUVs have added more technology.

Expected additions include a digital driver’s display, 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, wireless smartphone charging and automatic climate control.

Not every feature has been officially confirmed yet, so final specifications will matter when Mahindra reveals the SUV.

Still, these additions would significantly improve the Thar as an everyday vehicle.

A 360-degree camera could be especially useful because the Thar’s upright body and high bonnet can make tight urban parking less convenient than in a conventional crossover.

Ventilated seats would also be a genuinely useful addition in Indian weather rather than simply another specification-sheet feature.

The facelift may therefore make the Thar easier to live with Monday to Friday without weakening the adventurous image that sells it on weekends.

5. Engines Are Expected to Stay Familiar — And That May Be Good News

Mahindra is not expected to make major changes under the bonnet.

The facelift should continue with the existing range of petrol and diesel engines.

That includes the 1.5-litre diesel, 2.2-litre mHawk diesel and 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engines. Depending on the variant, six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions are also expected to continue.

The drivetrain strategy should remain familiar as well.

The smaller diesel is expected to continue as the more accessible rear-wheel-drive version, while the larger diesel remains closely associated with the 4×4 line-up. The turbo-petrol should continue offering both RWD and 4WD configurations depending on variant.

Mahindra may instead concentrate on improving refinement, insulation or overall ride quality rather than chasing dramatically different power figures.

For the Thar’s target customer, that may make more sense than a mechanical overhaul.

Price Could Decide How Attractive the Upgrade Really Is

The outgoing three-door Thar currently spans roughly ₹10.32 lakh to ₹18 lakh, ex-showroom, depending on engine, drivetrain and variant.

The facelift is widely expected to command a modest premium because of the additional equipment and styling changes. Autocar India currently expects pricing broadly in the ₹11 lakh-₹18.5 lakh region, although final prices will only become clear at launch.

Mahindra therefore faces an interesting balancing act.

Add too little and existing buyers may struggle to see the point of the facelift.

Add too much — and push the price considerably higher — and buyers begin moving closer to the larger Thar Roxx.

The sweet spot will be giving the three-door Thar enough technology to feel contemporary while preserving its position as the more focused lifestyle SUV.

Thar Facelift Still Has the Same Rivals — but a Bigger Challenge

Once launched, the refreshed Thar will continue competing with vehicles such as the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha.

However, Mahindra’s biggest challenge may now come from within its own showroom.

The Thar Roxx offers additional doors, greater practicality and a more feature-rich experience.

That means the three-door Thar needs a clear reason to exist beyond nostalgia.

Its compact proportions, distinct road presence and more focused adventure character still provide that reason. The facelift simply needs to ensure buyers no longer feel they must sacrifice too much comfort or technology to get it.

September 22 Will Reveal Whether Mahindra Has Found the Right Balance

The facelift is unlikely to change what made the Thar successful in the first place. Its upright silhouette, lifestyle appeal, rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive choices and unmistakable road presence should remain at the centre of the package. What Mahindra appears to be changing is everything that had begun making the three-door model feel dated beside newer SUVs.

If the expected LED lighting, improved cabin materials, digital features and convenience upgrades arrive without pushing prices too close to the Thar Roxx, the September 22 update could give the three-door Thar exactly what it needs: a more modern experience without losing the rugged personality that made it one of India’s most recognisable lifestyle SUVs.
