BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan | August 31, 2026 —
PM Modi at SCO Summit today will put India at the centre of a major round of Eurasian diplomacy as Prime Minister Narendra Modi joins Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and other regional leaders in Bishkek for the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit.
The two-day summit begins on August 31 and continues through September 1, marking 25 years of the SCO. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the gathering and present India’s priorities around security, connectivity and opportunity, while a closely watched bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin is also expected on the sidelines.
PM Modi reached Bishkek on August 30 after completing his visit to Uzbekistan. Kyrgyz authorities said he was received at Manas International Airport by Cabinet Chairman Adylbek Kasymaliev. His arrival, however, is background to today’s larger story: India’s participation in the summit and the diplomatic engagements expected through Monday.
PM Modi to Address SCO Summit Today
India has been a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation since 2017.
Ahead of the visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s approach to the region is anchored in three themes — Security, Connectivity and Opportunity.
He also stressed the need for a region free from terrorism, separatism and extremism, issues that have repeatedly formed a central part of India’s interventions at SCO meetings.
That gives today’s address particular significance.
New Delhi will be closely watched for its message on terrorism, regional stability and connectivity at a time when conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, energy-market volatility and changing global trade relationships are putting additional pressure on Eurasia.
Modi-Putin Meeting Could Be Today’s Biggest Bilateral
One of the most closely watched engagements in Bishkek is expected to be the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russian officials have indicated that President Putin has a series of bilateral meetings scheduled around the summit, including an expected interaction with PM Modi.
For India, that conversation could carry considerable strategic weight.
Russia remains a major Indian partner across energy, defence, nuclear cooperation and strategic diplomacy. Bilateral trade has also expanded sharply, although New Delhi continues to seek a more balanced commercial relationship.

India and Russia have set a target of raising bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030, making trade expansion and the imbalance between Indian exports and imports an important backdrop to high-level engagement.
Energy is equally important, particularly as geopolitical instability continues to influence crude oil, gas and shipping markets.
Xi Jinping Presence Puts India-China Ties in Spotlight
Chinese President Xi Jinping is also in Bishkek, putting India, China and Russia’s leaders at the same major multilateral gathering.
That alone gives the summit considerable geopolitical visibility.
A separate PM Modi-Xi Jinping bilateral meeting should, however, not be presented as confirmed until officially announced or completed.
Current reporting has described such an interaction as possible or likely, while India’s official pre-summit programme only confirms that PM Modi will hold bilateral meetings with SCO leaders without naming every leader involved.
That distinction matters for accurate live coverage.
Any confirmed India-China meeting later today would justify a substantial update to this same article.

Terrorism Likely to Remain Central to India’s SCO Message
Security has consistently been one of India’s strongest themes within the SCO.
Before leaving India, PM Modi specifically referred to the threat posed by terrorism, separatism and extremism and said he looked forward to working with other members for greater regional peace and stability.
The issue has added importance for New Delhi because the SCO includes countries with sharply different security interests and political relationships.
India’s challenge is to use the forum for practical regional cooperation while maintaining its longstanding position that terrorism should not be justified or addressed selectively.
Connectivity Is the Second Big India Priority
Connectivity is another important part of India’s Bishkek agenda.
For New Delhi, deeper engagement with Central Asia can support trade, energy access and strategic partnerships.
However, India has consistently linked connectivity with respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
That position differentiates India’s approach from some major regional infrastructure initiatives and is likely to remain relevant as SCO members discuss transport corridors and economic integration.
Why SCO Summit 2026 Matters More Than a Routine Meeting
The Bishkek summit comes at a highly unusual geopolitical moment.
Russia remains engaged in the Ukraine conflict. West Asia is under severe pressure. Energy markets remain sensitive to supply disruptions, while sanctions and trade restrictions are forcing governments to rethink commercial and financial relationships.
At the same time, China and Russia are seeking greater political and economic cooperation across Eurasia.
For India, the SCO therefore serves several purposes at once: a security forum, a Central Asia outreach platform and a venue where New Delhi can engage major powers without tying itself to any single geopolitical bloc.
PM Modi Will Also Attend World Nomad Games Opening
PM Modi’s Kyrgyzstan programme is not limited to formal summit diplomacy.
India’s official schedule says he will also attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games, an event showcasing Central Asia’s cultural heritage.
The programme fits into India’s broader effort to build stronger cultural and people-to-people connections with Central Asian countries alongside strategic and economic ties.
