Parliament Monsoon Session: Opposition to Intensify Protest, Floor Leaders Meet to Finalize Joint Strategy
Parliament Monsoon Session tensions are expected to escalate on Friday as opposition parties prepare a coordinated strategy to challenge the government inside and outside Parliament over a series of contentious issues.
Leaders of opposition parties from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are scheduled to meet in the office of the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha to formulate a joint plan for the remaining days of the Monsoon Session. Immediately after the meeting, opposition MPs are expected to stage a protest at Makar Dwar of the Parliament complex at around 10:30 a.m.
Opposition to Focus on Two Key Issues
Opposition parties are expected to raise two primary issues during Friday’s proceedings:
Demand for Amit Shah’s Statement on July 20 Police Action
The opposition is seeking a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the alleged use of force by police during protests held at Jantar Mantar on July 20. Opposition leaders have demanded an explanation over reports of baton charges, tear gas, and other police actions against demonstrators.
Ram Temple Donation Controversy
The opposition also plans to press the government over allegations of financial irregularities involving donations and offerings made to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The issue has become a major point of political confrontation during the ongoing session.
Key Business Scheduled in Parliament
Despite the expected disruptions, the government has listed several important legislative items for discussion in the Lok Sabha.
Among the bills scheduled for consideration are:
- Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026
- Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026
Private Members’ Bills to Be Introduced
Friday’s agenda also includes several Private Members’ Bills, including:
- Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is expected to introduce a bill focusing on the rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits, protection of their properties, and preservation of their cultural heritage.
- Congress MP K.C. Venugopal is likely to introduce legislation aimed at improving the welfare and safety of fishermen in India’s coastal states.
- National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi is expected to move amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act.
FCRA Amendment Bill Likely Next Week
Despite continued opposition protests, the government is also expected to take up the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 (FCRA Amendment Bill) for discussion in Parliament on August 12, according to parliamentary sources.
The proposed legislation has generated significant political debate, with opposition parties raising concerns over its implications for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the regulation of foreign funding.
