India New Zealand FTA is expected to unlock new opportunities for economic growth, agricultural innovation, and rural development, with New Zealand pledging to become a long-term partner in India’s development journey.
New Zealand Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay said the recently signed India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) provides a strong foundation for expanding bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, particularly agriculture, innovation, and agri-technology.
According to McClay, the agreement marks a significant milestone in relations between the two countries and positions New Zealand as a strategic partner in supporting India’s economic ambitions.
FTA Creates a Strong Platform for Economic Partnership
McClay said the free trade agreement would strengthen commercial ties and open new avenues for collaboration between businesses, investors, and governments in both countries.
“The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement provides a strong platform for both nations to deepen their economic partnership. As India’s partner, New Zealand can contribute to the country’s continued economic development,” he said.
The agreement is expected to enhance trade flows, encourage investment, and facilitate greater cooperation in sectors where both countries have complementary strengths.
Agriculture and Agri-Tech at the Center of Cooperation
Highlighting one of the key areas of collaboration, McClay said New Zealand’s globally recognized expertise in agriculture could help India improve farm productivity and increase rural incomes.
He noted that New Zealand has extensive experience in:
- Modern farming techniques
- Agricultural innovation
- Dairy and livestock management
- Sustainable farming practices
- Agri-technology solutions
- Food production efficiency
McClay said these capabilities could support India’s efforts to modernize its agricultural sector while improving productivity and long-term sustainability.
Support for India’s Farmers
The New Zealand minister also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of increasing farmers’ incomes and said New Zealand is ready to contribute through knowledge-sharing, innovation, and technology.
“Agriculture is a good example. We have expertise, innovation, and agri-technology that can benefit India. We can support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and contribute to the goal of increasing Indian farmers’ incomes by 50 percent by 2030.”
He added that New Zealand possesses the technical expertise and practical experience needed to play a meaningful role in achieving this objective through bilateral cooperation.
Praise for India’s Economic Transformation
McClay also praised India’s rapid development under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, noting that each visit to the country has reflected significant economic and social progress.
He said the pace of infrastructure development, economic reforms, and educational advancement has been particularly impressive.
According to McClay, India’s growing investment in education and skills development is creating opportunities for young people to gain international work experience before returning to contribute to the domestic economy.
“The transformation taking place in India is remarkable. Young people are becoming more educated, gaining international experience, and bringing those skills back to strengthen India’s economy.”
He described this strategy as a major driver of India’s future economic growth.
Historic Visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi
McClay highlighted the significance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to New Zealand, describing it as a landmark moment in bilateral relations.
According to the minister, the visit will be the first by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in four decades, taking place only months after the signing of the landmark free trade agreement.
He said the timing underscores the growing strategic partnership between the two nations.
Indian Community Preparing Grand Welcome
McClay said preparations are underway for a major public celebration in New Zealand’s largest city to welcome Prime Minister Modi.
He noted that the country’s Indian-origin community is looking forward to the visit, which is expected to further strengthen people-to-people ties alongside expanding economic cooperation.
The minister said the visit reflects the increasing importance of India-New Zealand relations and signals a new chapter in bilateral engagement.
Trade Agreement Expected to Expand Cooperation Across Key Sectors
Beyond agriculture, the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement is expected to encourage collaboration in several high-growth sectors, including:
- Trade and investment
- Food processing
- Technology and innovation
- Education and skills development
- Sustainable agriculture
- Research and development
- Supply chain cooperation
Business leaders in both countries are expected to explore new investment opportunities following the implementation of the agreement.
A New Phase in India-New Zealand Relations
The India New Zealand FTA represents one of the most significant milestones in bilateral relations in recent years. With both governments emphasizing innovation, agriculture, investment, and economic cooperation, the agreement is expected to create long-term opportunities for businesses, farmers, and consumers in both countries.
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for his historic visit to New Zealand, officials from both nations say the strengthened partnership has the potential to accelerate economic growth, expand trade, and deepen collaboration across a wide range of strategic sectors.
