Arvind Kejriwal to Lead March to PM Residence Over E20 Fuel Policy, Plans to Submit 233,000-Signature Petition
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has announced a march to the Prime Minister’s residence on Tuesday to protest the government’s E20 ethanol-blended fuel policy. The party says it will submit a petition signed by 233,238 people, urging the Centre to reconsider the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol.
According to AAP, Kejriwal and around 100 party workers will begin the march from the party headquarters at 12:00 p.m. The party said it has sought permission from the Delhi Police, but approval had not been granted at the time of the announcement.
AAP Raises Concerns Over E20 Fuel
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Kejriwal claimed that many vehicle owners are facing difficulties due to the use of E20 fuel, alleging that it has reduced fuel efficiency and caused mechanical issues in some vehicles.
He accused the government of implementing the policy without adequately addressing public concerns and called for a wider consultation before expanding its use.
The central government has maintained that E20 (20% ethanol-blended petrol) is part of India’s strategy to reduce crude oil imports, lower emissions, and promote cleaner fuels.
Petition to Be Submitted to the Prime Minister
AAP said it recently launched an online petition addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi against the E20 fuel policy.
According to the party, the campaign received 233,238 signatures within a short period. Kejriwal said he had also sought an appointment with the Prime Minister about a month ago but had not received a response.
The party now plans to deliver the petition in person during Tuesday’s march, expressing hope that the Prime Minister will accept the memorandum and consider its demands.
Kejriwal Cites Public Response
Kejriwal also referred to a recent town hall meeting organized by AAP on the E20 issue, claiming it drew a large audience both in person and online.
He alleged that individuals raising concerns about the policy—including content creators and vehicle owners—had faced online criticism and other forms of pressure. These claims have not been independently verified.
Police Permission Awaited
As of Monday evening, Delhi Police had not confirmed permission for the proposed march.
Authorities are expected to review the request in light of traffic management and security arrangements around the Prime Minister’s residence.
Government’s Position
The Government of India has consistently promoted ethanol blending as a key component of its clean energy and energy security strategy.
Officials have said that increasing ethanol blending:
- Reduces dependence on imported crude oil.
- Supports farmers through higher demand for ethanol feedstock.
- Lowers carbon emissions from the transport sector.
- Helps achieve India’s environmental and energy transition goals.
The Centre has previously stated that automobile manufacturers have been preparing vehicles compatible with higher ethanol blends in line with the phased rollout.
