Global warming 1.5°C threshold is now likely to be crossed within the next few years, the United Nations Environment Programme warned on Wednesday, delivering one of the clearest signals yet that the world is entering a more dangerous phase of climate change.
UNEP released its new Limiting Overshoot report on September 2 and said current climate policies no longer provide a realistic path to avoiding a temporary breach of the Paris Agreement’s most ambitious temperature goal.
The agency now wants governments to focus urgently on making the overshoot as small and short as possible and then bring global temperatures back down.
Even the most optimistic pathway assessed in the report sees warming peak at around 1.8°C above pre-industrial levels before temperatures eventually decline.
