Stock Market Today: Sensex Jumps Over 200 Points, Nifty Holds Above 24,340 as Crude Oil Slides

Sensex and Nifty opened on a positive note on August 26 as falling crude oil prices eased concerns over India's energy costs.

MUMBAI, INDIA | AUGUST 26, 2026 —

Stock Market Today opened on a cautiously positive note Wednesday as a sharp decline in crude oil prices gave Indian equities some relief from weeks of Middle East-driven inflation and energy concerns.

The BSE Sensex was around 77,892 in early trade, more than 200 points above Tuesday’s closing level, while the Nifty 50 hovered near 24,342, holding slightly above its previous close.

The biggest trigger came from the international oil market. Brent crude fell more than 2% toward $86 a barrel after renewed Iran-Oman discussions raised hopes of progress toward restoring safer navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

For India, one of the world’s biggest crude oil importers, lower oil prices can be a significant positive for inflation, the rupee, corporate costs and overall stock-market sentiment.

Why Sensex and Nifty Are in Focus Today

Indian equities entered Wednesday after a volatile but positive Tuesday session.

The Nifty 50 closed Tuesday at 24,334.55, gaining 115.50 points or 0.48%, while the Sensex finished 286.98 points higher at 77,656.09.

Markets had initially struggled before buying strengthened later in the session.

Wednesday’s early trade suggests investors are now assessing whether the fall in crude oil can provide enough support for the recovery to continue.

In early trade, most major sectoral indices were in positive territory, while broader mid-cap and small-cap indices also showed modest gains.

Crude Oil Fall Gives India a Major Relief Trigger

Oil remains one of the most important external variables for Indian markets.

Brent crude dropped roughly 2.7% toward $86.20 per barrel after Iran and Oman discussed a temporary navigation arrangement connected to the Strait of Hormuz.

The development does not mean geopolitical risks have disappeared or that the strait has fully normalized.

However, even the possibility of improved shipping conditions has reduced some immediate fears of a severe energy-supply disruption.

This is important for India because expensive crude can increase the country’s import bill, pressure the rupee and push transportation and manufacturing costs higher.

The drop from levels near $94 seen last week therefore represents a meaningful change in the short-term market backdrop.

Is NSE and BSE Open Today on Eid-e-Milad?

Yes. NSE and BSE are open for regular trading on August 26, 2026.

However, August 26 is a settlement holiday on account of Id-E-Milad.

This distinction is important for investors.

A settlement holiday does not automatically mean the stock exchanges are closed for trading. Investors can buy and sell shares during normal market hours, but clearing and settlement schedules can be affected.

NSE Clearing’s official calendar lists August 26 as an Id-E-Milad settlement holiday.

Investors can check exchange updates directly on the NSE Market Timings and Holidays page.

Rupee and Oil Remain Closely Linked

Another important factor for investors is the Indian rupee.

India imports most of its crude oil requirements, so sustained increases in global energy prices can create additional demand for dollars and increase pressure on the domestic currency.

Conversely, a meaningful decline in crude can provide some relief.

Global Markets Await Nvidia Earnings

Indian investors are also watching global technology stocks ahead of Nvidia’s latest earnings.

Asian markets were mixed Wednesday as investors balanced lower crude oil prices against caution ahead of the chipmaker’s results and upcoming U.S. economic data.

Nvidia’s numbers are closely tracked worldwide because the company has become a key indicator of demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure and semiconductor spending.

A major surprise in its earnings or outlook could influence technology shares across global markets.

Stocks and Themes to Watch Today

Apart from Sensex and Nifty, several themes are likely to attract investor attention during Wednesday’s session.

Hindustan Copper remains in focus as the government’s offer for sale enters the retail-investor phase.

The primary market is also busy, with multiple IPOs open this week.

Crude-sensitive sectors such as aviation, paints, chemicals, logistics and oil-marketing companies may also respond to the sharp movement in global energy prices.

What Investors Should Watch Next

Three factors could determine the direction of the Indian market today: crude oil prices, developments around the Strait of Hormuz and global risk sentiment.

If Brent crude continues to retreat, Indian equities could receive further support because lower oil prices reduce concerns over inflation and the country’s import bill.

However, geopolitical developments remain unpredictable, while global investors are also awaiting Nvidia earnings and U.S. economic signals.

For now, the Indian market has started Wednesday with a positive bias, but investors should expect intraday volatility as fresh global cues emerge.
