Ladakh to Launch India’s First High-Altitude Wildlife Safari for Snow Leopard and Bird-Watching Enthusiasts

LEH, Ladakh — Ladakh High-Altitude Wildlife Safari: India is set to introduce its first guided high-altitude wildlife safari in Ladakh, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the Himalayan region’s rare biodiversity through organized snow leopard and bird-watching expeditions.

The initiative, approved by Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena, aims to promote responsible eco-tourism while strengthening community-based wildlife conservation and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local residents.

Officials say the project is expected to become India’s first comprehensive model integrating wildlife conservation, environmental education, and tourism-driven economic development.

Guided Snow Leopard Safaris to Begin

The Ladakh administration has directed the Forest Department to introduce guided open-back jeep safaris, modeled after wildlife tourism experiences in national parks such as Kaziranga and Ranthambore.

Under the plan:

• Trained local drivers and certified wildlife guides will escort visitors.
• Safaris will operate only on designated routes.
• Controlled access is expected to reduce off-road driving and minimize human disturbance to fragile wildlife habitats.
• Visitors will enjoy a safer and more informative wildlife experience.

SHAN Conservation Society to Lead the Initiative

The project was approved during the first Governing Body meeting of the newly established Snow Leopard and High-Altitude Nature (SHAN) Conservation Society.

The organization will develop wildlife safari routes across several ecologically significant regions, including:

• Hemis National Park
• Changthang
• Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary
• Nubra Valley
• Zanskar
• Sham Valley
• Kargil
• Drass

Authorities have instructed relevant departments to complete preparations before the upcoming winter snow leopard viewing season.

Conservation and Local Livelihoods at the Core

Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena emphasized that Ladakh’s greatest asset is its fragile mountain ecosystem and extraordinary biodiversity.

He said conservation efforts can succeed only when local communities actively participate and benefit economically through responsible tourism.

According to the administration, the SHAN initiative aims to position Ladakh as a global example of community-led conservation and sustainable mountain eco-tourism.

Ladakh Is India’s Snow Leopard Capital

Ladakh is home to the country’s largest snow leopard population.

According to official estimates:

• 477 snow leopards are found in Ladakh.
• India has an estimated 718 snow leopards nationwide.
• The region also supports:
  • 38+ mammal species
  • 340 bird species
  • Approximately 1,800 vascular plant species

The safari program is expected to showcase this unique biodiversity while encouraging long-term habitat protection.

Local Youth to Be Trained as Wildlife Guides

As part of the project:

• 20 local young people will receive professional training as bird-watching and wildlife guides.
• Participants will be provided with binoculars and essential field equipment.
• Ten bird-watching hides will be established at key locations across Ladakh.

The initiative is expected to generate employment while improving the visitor experience.

Environmental Education in Schools

To encourage wildlife conservation among students, the administration will establish SHAN Wildlife Clubs in 50 government schools.

Each participating school will receive ₹30,000 to support environmental awareness activities and conservation education programs.

SHAN Action Plan

The conservation strategy includes several community-focused initiatives:

• Installation of 300 color-coded waste bins across 40 villages
• A plastic-free tourism campaign throughout Ladakh
• Annual wildlife photography fellowships for 10 young photographers
• Training for 50 women artisans to create wildlife-themed souvenirs
• Information boards and environmental awareness campaigns in protected areas
• Expansion of souvenir shops promoting locally made wildlife products
• Tourism initiatives that generate sustainable income for local communities

Vision for Sustainable Mountain Tourism

The Ladakh administration says the SHAN initiative is designed to balance tourism growth with ecological protection by combining wildlife conservation, responsible travel, education, and community participation under a single long-term framework.

Officials believe the project could become an international benchmark for sustainable mountain tourism while helping preserve one of the world’s most fragile alpine ecosystems.
