MBBS Seats 2026 have received a significant boost after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved 9,911 additional MBBS seats and 25 new medical colleges for the 2026–27 academic session. The move increases India’s total MBBS intake capacity to 136,939 seats, providing more opportunities for students who appeared in NEET UG 2026.
According to the NMC, the expansion is aimed at strengthening medical education infrastructure and increasing the availability of qualified doctors across the country. The newly approved colleges and seat additions are expected to play a key role in addressing the growing demand for medical education.
India’s MBBS Capacity Crosses 136,000 Seats
With the latest approvals, India now has 136,939 MBBS seats spread across 823 medical colleges.
The country’s medical education network now includes:
- 823 Medical Colleges
- 441 Government Medical Colleges
- 382 Private Medical Colleges
The increase marks another major expansion in India’s healthcare education sector, offering additional admission opportunities for thousands of aspiring doctors.
Government and Private Colleges Both Receive Additional Seats
According to the NMC, the newly approved 9,911 MBBS seats include:
- 2,111 seats in Government Medical Colleges
- 7,800 seats in Private Medical Colleges
The larger share of new seats has been allocated to private institutions, while government colleges have also expanded their intake to improve overall capacity.
25 New Medical Colleges Approved
The commission has also approved 25 new medical colleges for the upcoming academic session.
These include:
- 7 New Government Medical Colleges with 400 MBBS seats
- 18 New Private Medical Colleges with 2,000 MBBS seats
In total, 2,400 seats will be available in these newly established institutions.
The remaining approved seats have been added by increasing the admission capacity of existing medical colleges across various states.
Major Relief for NEET UG 2026 Candidates
The expansion comes as positive news for students who appeared in NEET UG 2026, India’s national entrance examination for undergraduate medical courses.
A higher number of MBBS seats is expected to:
- Improve admission opportunities.
- Increase the chances of seat allotment.
- Support the growing demand for medical education.
- Expand healthcare workforce capacity over the coming years.
However, admission will continue to be based on NEET UG merit, reservation policies, and counseling procedures.
Seat Matrix May Be Revised
The NMC clarified that the published seat matrix has been prepared based on approvals granted by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB).
The commission also noted that the numbers may be revised if:
- The Appellate Authority issues a fresh order.
- A competent authority approves additional changes.
- Any pending appeals result in revised permissions.
Medical colleges have been instructed to admit students only against the officially approved number of seats.
State-Wise Seat Increase
Several states have witnessed substantial growth in MBBS intake capacity.
Karnataka
- 1,300 new MBBS seats (highest increase nationwide)
Tamil Nadu
- 950 additional MBBS seats
Uttar Pradesh
- 800 new seats, all in private medical colleges
- No increase in government medical college seats
- Total MBBS intake in the state will reach 14,000 seats
Uttarakhand

Himachal Pradesh
- 1 additional MBBS seat
Other states have also received seat enhancements through expansions in existing institutions and approvals for new colleges.
Why the Expansion Matters
India has steadily increased medical education capacity over the past several years to address shortages in healthcare professionals.
The latest approvals are expected to:
- Produce more qualified doctors.
- Strengthen healthcare infrastructure.
- Improve access to medical education.
- Support future public health requirements.
- Expand opportunities for students from diverse regions.
The addition of new colleges is also expected to improve healthcare services in underserved districts where medical education infrastructure has been limited.
What Happens Next?
The approved MBBS seats will be available during the NEET UG 2026 counseling process, subject to:
- NMC approval conditions.
- Counseling schedules issued by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) and state authorities.
- Compliance by individual medical colleges.
Students are advised to refer to official counseling notifications for updated seat matrices and participating institutions.
