Stock Market Today: Sensex Rallies 788 Points, Nifty Opens Strong as New F&O Closing Rules Begin

Stock Market Today began the week on a positive note as India’s benchmark equity indices opened sharply higher on Monday. The BSE Sensex surged 788 points in early trade, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 189 points, supported by favorable global markets, easing crude oil prices, and encouraging corporate earnings.

Investor sentiment also remained focused on the upcoming Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting later this week, where market participants will closely monitor interest rate guidance and the central bank’s economic outlook.

Global Cues and Corporate Earnings Support Market

Indian equities opened in the green after positive signals from global markets improved overall investor confidence.

Key factors supporting the rally included:

  • Declining international crude oil prices
  • Strong quarterly earnings reported by listed companies
  • Positive global market sentiment
  • Expectations surrounding the RBI’s monetary policy decision

Market analysts believe investors are positioning themselves ahead of the central bank’s policy announcement, which could influence interest rates, liquidity, and borrowing costs.

Major Change Takes Effect in F&O Trading

Monday also marked the implementation of an important structural reform in India’s equity derivatives market.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), together with the stock exchanges, has introduced the Closing Auction Session (CAS) for stocks included in the Futures & Options (F&O) segment.

The move changes how the official closing price of F&O stocks is determined.

How the New Closing Auction Session Works

Previously, the closing price of F&O stocks was calculated using the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) during the final minutes of trading.

Under the new system:

  • Buy and sell orders will be collected after 3:15 PM.
  • Orders will be matched through a centralized closing auction.
  • The equilibrium price determined through this auction will become the official closing price for the stock.

The objective is to create a more transparent and efficient price discovery process.

Why the New System Matters

According to market regulators, the Closing Auction Session is designed to:

  • Improve transparency in determining closing prices.
  • Reduce the impact of unusually large last-minute trades.
  • Prevent potential price manipulation during the final minutes of trading.
  • Strengthen price discovery in the equity derivatives market.

In addition, trading hours for equity derivatives have been extended by 10 minutes, aligning with the implementation of the new settlement mechanism.

Market Focus This Week

Apart from corporate earnings, investors will closely watch several market-moving events, including:

  • RBI Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting
  • Interest rate outlook
  • Inflation guidance
  • Global commodity prices
  • Foreign institutional investor (FII) activity

Analysts expect market volatility to remain elevated as investors react to policy announcements and global economic developments.

Key Highlights

  • Sensex opened 788 points higher on Monday.
  • Nifty gained 189 points in early trading.
  • Falling crude oil prices and strong quarterly earnings supported market sentiment.
  • Investors are awaiting the RBI’s upcoming Monetary Policy Committee decision.
  • SEBI’s new Closing Auction Session (CAS) for F&O stocks became effective from Monday.
  • The new framework aims to improve transparency and strengthen price discovery.
