A dramatic battle over the 2029 Prime Ministerial face has opened inside Tamil Nadu’s ruling alliance, with Congress minister S. Rajesh Kumar warning that the party’s two ministers could quit the state cabinet if Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) refuses to back Rahul Gandhi for Prime Minister.
The statement has turned what appeared to be political positioning into a potentially serious coalition dispute.
Rajesh Kumar, Tamil Nadu’s Tourism Minister, told Congress workers in Kanyakumari that Rahul Gandhi remained the party’s choice for the top national post and declared that Congress ministers would not continue in the government if TVK rejected that position.
His remarks come amid growing attempts by some TVK leaders and ministers to project Chief Minister Vijay as a potential national leader and future Prime Ministerial contender.
However, TVK has not formally declared Vijay as its 2029 Prime Ministerial candidate.
Congress Draws a Red Line Over Rahul Gandhi
Rajesh Kumar’s message was unusually direct.
He argued that political allies can disagree on several issues, but Congress workers see Rahul Gandhi as their national leader and Prime Ministerial face for the next Lok Sabha election.
He also indicated that holding a ministerial position was secondary to the party’s political line.
The warning effectively puts a politically sensitive question before the TVK-Congress partnership:

For now, there is no common answer.
Why Vijay’s Name Has Suddenly Entered the PM Debate
The controversy did not emerge in isolation.
Over recent weeks, several voices associated with TVK have spoken enthusiastically about Vijay’s growing national profile and suggested that a leader from Tamil Nadu could emerge as a future Prime Minister.
Vijay’s rise has been rapid.
The actor-turned-politician launched TVK before moving fully into electoral politics and later became Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after the 2026 Assembly election.
His political success has naturally intensified speculation about whether TVK could eventually seek a larger role in national politics.

But there is an important distinction between supporters projecting Vijay as a future PM and an official TVK declaration naming him as the party’s 2029 Prime Ministerial candidate.
That formal declaration has not been made.
Rahul Gandhi vs Vijay Narrative Creates Alliance Headache
For Congress, the issue goes beyond Tamil Nadu.
Rahul Gandhi is Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and remains the party’s most prominent national face.
Allowing a coalition partner to aggressively promote another leader for Prime Minister could weaken Congress’s own national messaging ahead of 2029.
TVK, meanwhile, has different political calculations.
The party may want to expand beyond Tamil Nadu and build Vijay into a national political brand without immediately surrendering its negotiating position to Congress.
That difference is now creating visible tension.
Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister P. Viswanathan, the other Congress representative in the government, has also publicly backed Rahul Gandhi as the party’s Prime Ministerial choice.
The debate has therefore moved beyond an isolated comment by one politician.
Could Congress Ministers Really Resign?
Rajesh Kumar’s statement is a political warning, not yet a resignation.
Neither Congress minister has submitted a resignation, and no formal decision by the Congress high command to leave the Tamil Nadu government has been announced.
That distinction is crucial.
For now, this is best understood as an ultimatum within the alliance, rather than a collapse of the coalition.
However, the warning matters because Congress played an important role in supporting the Vijay-led government after the 2026 Tamil Nadu election.
A prolonged disagreement over national leadership could complicate coordination between the allies.

Vijay Has Not Personally Declared Himself PM Candidate

Yet parties are already attempting to define leadership narratives.
For Congress, Rahul Gandhi remains central to that strategy.
For TVK, Vijay’s popularity gives the party political leverage that extends beyond Tamil Nadu.
And that is precisely why the current disagreement could become more important than an ordinary exchange of political statements.

What Happens Next?
Three developments will now matter.
First, whether TVK leadership formally responds to Rajesh Kumar’s ultimatum.
