NMMSS Scholarship 2026 applications are entering their final days, with eligible students having until August 31, 2026 to submit fresh or renewal applications for the 2026–27 academic year through the National Scholarship Portal.
The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme is designed to support meritorious students from economically weaker families and reduce school dropouts after Class VIII.
Under the scheme, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded every year to selected Class IX students, while eligible awardees can continue receiving the scholarship through Classes X to XII under the renewal process.
The scholarship amount is ₹12,000 per year per student.
NMMSS Scholarship 2026 Last Date
The Ministry of Education has confirmed the following deadlines:
- Student application deadline: August 31, 2026
- Institute-level verification deadline: September 15, 2026
- District-level verification deadline: September 30, 2026
Students should avoid waiting until the final day because incomplete OTR registration, Aadhaar authentication or document issues could prevent timely submission.

Who Can Apply for NMMSS Scholarship 2026?
One important point is often misunderstood.
A fresh NMMSS application is not open to every Class IX student automatically.
Fresh applicants are generally students selected through the State or Union Territory-level NMMS examination and admitted to Class IX under the scheme.
The scholarship applies to eligible students studying in:
- State government schools
- Government-aided schools
- Local body schools
The scheme is intended for meritorious students from economically weaker households.
NMMSS Income Limit
The parental income ceiling is:
₹3.5 lakh per year from all sources.

How Much Scholarship Will Students Get?

Renewal Application

OTR Is Mandatory on NSP
Students applying through the National Scholarship Portal need a One Time Registration, or OTR, number.
NSP describes OTR as a unique 14-digit number linked to the student’s Aadhaar or Aadhaar Enrollment ID and usable throughout the student’s academic career.
Students who have not completed OTR should do this before attempting the scholarship application.

Exact upload requirements can vary depending on the student, school and State/UT, but applicants should generally keep the following information and documents ready:
- Aadhaar or Aadhaar Enrollment ID
- NSP One Time Registration number

- Previous class marksheet
- School details
- State/UT NMMS selection details

The District Nodal Officer has until September 30 for Level-2 verification.
Students should therefore ensure that the application information is correct and that their school can verify it without unnecessary delays.
New NSP Rule for 2026–27
From the 2026–27 academic year, NSP allows eligible students to apply for one merit-based scholarship scheme and one or more welfare-based scholarship schemes simultaneously, subject to meeting the respective eligibility criteria.
NMMSS is classified on NSP as a merit-based scheme.
This change may be useful for students who are also eligible for separate welfare-based assistance.
