Indonesia Ferry Fire claimed at least five lives after a passenger ferry carrying 271 people caught fire near Madura Island on Sunday, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation. The ferry, identified by Indonesian authorities as Mutiara Sentosa 2, was traveling from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi when the fire broke out early Sunday morning. The ferry operator alerted rescue authorities after receiving a distress report from the captain, but communication with the vessel was later lost. Videos circulating online showed dense smoke billowing from the ferry while frightened passengers awaited rescue or leaped into the sea.
