Heavy Rain in Delhi-NCR Causes Flooding, Traffic Gridlock; Landslides Disrupt Travel Across North India
Heavy Rain in Delhi-NCR disrupted normal life on Thursday as intense monsoon showers flooded major roads, triggered widespread traffic congestion, and brought a sharp drop in temperatures. Meanwhile, persistent rainfall in the Himalayan region caused landslides that blocked more than 250 roads across Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the active monsoon system is expected to continue affecting several northern states over the coming days, with heavy rainfall warnings issued for multiple regions.
Delhi and Gurugram Face Severe Waterlogging
Delhi recorded 56 mm of rainfall on Thursday, leading to widespread waterlogging in several neighborhoods. Flooded roads caused major traffic disruptions, while commuters, schoolchildren, and office workers faced lengthy delays.
The rainfall also brought welcome relief from heat and humidity, with the city’s maximum temperature falling by nearly 5 degrees Celsius within 24 hours.
Neighboring Gurugram received 117 mm of rainfall, resulting in severe flooding across several arterial roads.
Traffic Slows Across Key Routes
Heavy rain left waterlogged stretches on several major routes, including:
- Delhi-Jaipur Highway
- Dhaula Kuan
- Kalindi Kunj
- Delhi-Meerut Expressway
- Green Park
- AIIMS corridor
- Other major roads across Delhi and NCR
Vehicles moved at a crawl for several hours as commuters struggled through flooded intersections.
In view of the weather conditions, Gurugram Police appealed to private companies to allow employees to work from home wherever possible to reduce traffic congestion.
Landslides Block More Than 250 Roads
Continuous rainfall in the Himalayan region triggered multiple landslides, severely affecting transportation.
Authorities reported that:
- 132 roads remain closed in Uttarakhand
- 120 roads are blocked in Himachal Pradesh
Road restoration work is underway, but officials have warned travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys into mountainous areas until conditions improve.
Apple Orchards Damaged in Jammu and Kashmir
Heavy rainfall has also affected Shopian district in Jammu and Kashmir, where reports indicate damage to apple orchards.
The IMD has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Jammu and Kashmir from August 9 to August 12, raising concerns about additional landslides, flash floods, and agricultural losses.
Assam Flood Situation Remains Critical
Flood conditions continue to worsen in Assam, where six additional fatalities were reported.
According to state authorities:
- The seasonal death toll has risen to 95
- More than 160,000 people remain affected by flooding
Relief and rescue operations are continuing in several flood-hit districts.
IMD Issues Yellow Alert for 15 States
The India Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for Friday across 15 states, including:
- Delhi
- Uttar Pradesh
- Bihar
- Rajasthan
- Uttarakhand
- Haryana
- Punjab
- Himachal Pradesh
- Jammu and Kashmir
Forecasters expect:
- Heavy rainfall in several districts
- Thunderstorms
- Wind speeds reaching 60 km/h
- Increased risk of landslides in hilly regions
The weather department has advised farmers, tourists, and fishermen to monitor official forecasts and avoid vulnerable areas during periods of intense rainfall.
Authorities Urge Caution
Officials have warned residents living in low-lying areas to remain alert for possible waterlogging, while travelers heading to hill states have been advised to check road conditions before departure.
Emergency response teams have been placed on standby in several states as authorities continue to monitor the evolving weather situation.
