The Asian Games 2026 medal tally has a golden glow for India after the women’s cricket team delivered the country’s first gold medal of the Games.
India now has seven officially won medals — one gold, four silver and two bronze.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s team ended India’s wait for gold with a crushing 147-run victory over Sri Lanka in the women’s T20 cricket final. The win also pushed India’s overall medal count from six to seven.
However, the number could rise again as several Indian athletes and teams have already moved into medal-producing rounds across badminton and wushu.

Women’s Cricket Delivers India’s First Gold
India entered Tuesday still searching for its first gold medal in Aichi-Nagoya.
The women’s cricket team changed that dramatically.
India posted 216/3 against Sri Lanka after choosing to bat first. Smriti Mandhana smashed 79, Shafali Verma struck 48 and Richa Ghosh finished unbeaten on 49 from only 22 balls.
Then the bowlers took over.
Sri Lanka collapsed for 69 in 15.4 overs as India completed a massive 147-run victory.
The result gave India its first gold medal of Asian Games 2026 and successfully defended the women’s cricket title won at Hangzhou.
Shooting Has Powered India’s Medal Campaign
Before the cricket gold arrived, shooting had carried much of India’s early medal challenge.
Five of India’s first six officially won medals came from shooting.
Elavenil Valarivan emerged as one of India’s biggest early performers. She won silver in the women’s 10m air rifle individual competition and also helped the women’s team secure silver alongside Sonam Uttam Maskar and Vidarsa K. Vinod.
The men then continued the medal run.
Rudrankksh Patil, Himanshu Dhillon and Parth Mane combined to win silver in the men’s 10m air rifle team event.
Himanshu later added an individual silver, while Rudrankksh claimed bronze.
Suchika Tariyal Creates MMA History
Mixed martial arts also added an important medal to India’s total.
Suchika Tariyal claimed bronze in the women’s Traditional 60kg competition.
Her podium finish carried additional significance because MMA is making its Asian Games debut, making Tariyal one of India’s first medal-winning names in the discipline at the continental Games.

More Medals Already on the Horizon
India’s official total stands at seven, but that figure does not tell the entire story.
The Indian men’s badminton team defeated host Japan 3-0 in the quarterfinals and advanced to the semifinals, securing at least a medal.
Lakshya Sen produced a crucial singles victory, while Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty strengthened India’s position in doubles.
Ayush Shetty then helped complete the sweep.
Meanwhile, Naorem Roshibina Devi reached the women’s 60kg wushu sanda semifinals, assuring India of another medal.
Therefore, India’s official medal table could change quickly as the remaining events move toward their finals.
India’s Gold Changes the Picture
The first gold matters for more than the overall medal count.
Asian Games rankings prioritize gold medals before silver and bronze. Therefore, India’s cricket triumph gives the country a much stronger position than its previous tally of four silvers and two bronzes suggested.
The medal table remains highly fluid because dozens of events are still underway.
China, Japan and South Korea have occupied the leading positions during the opening phase of the Games, while several other Asian nations continue to add medals throughout the competition.
India, meanwhile, has finally added the color it was waiting for — gold.
Can India Challenge Its Hangzhou Record?
India entered Aichi-Nagoya carrying huge expectations after its historic performance at the previous Asian Games.
At Hangzhou, India won a record 107 medals — 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze.
That remains the benchmark for the 2026 contingent.
It is still far too early to judge whether India can match or surpass that total. Athletics, archery, shooting, wrestling, badminton, hockey, kabaddi and several other medal-rich events still have major competitions ahead.
For now, however, September 22 has provided the breakthrough India wanted.
The first gold is on the board.
The official tally has reached seven.
And several more medals are already within reach as India’s Asian Games 2026 campaign gathers momentum.
