MUMBAI, India | September 18, 2026 —
Indian stock markets opened higher on Friday, September 18, as easing crude oil prices and strong global markets brought buyers back to Dalal Street.
The Nifty 50 climbed to 23,315.80, up about 45 points or 0.20%, by 9:23 AM IST, while the BSE Sensex rose around 160 points to 74,474.19, gaining 0.22%.
The opening was therefore clearly positive, although the gains remained modest rather than signalling a sharp rally.
Buying was broad-based in early trade, with 15 of the 16 major sectoral indices trading higher. Mid-cap and small-cap indices also gained around 0.2%.
Why Did Sensex and Nifty Open Higher?
The biggest support came from crude oil.
Brent crude slipped around 0.9% to nearly $104 a barrel, extending its decline for a third consecutive session.
Lower crude prices are positive for India because the country imports most of its oil requirements. A sustained decline can ease pressure on inflation, the rupee and corporate costs.
Global markets also provided support.
US stocks rallied overnight, while major Asian indices opened higher on Friday morning.
Nifty Crosses 23,300, Now 23,400 Becomes Crucial
Nifty’s move above 23,300 in early trade is important because this area has acted as an immediate hurdle.
The next level to watch is around 23,400.
If Nifty sustains above 23,400, the recovery could extend toward 23,500–23,600.
However, if the index slips back below 23,300, the early gains could weaken.
FII Selling Still a Risk
Foreign institutional investors remain cautious.
FIIs sold Indian equities worth about ₹3,209 crore on Thursday, while domestic institutional investors bought around ₹3,618 crore.
Persistent foreign selling could limit the market’s upside even if global cues remain supportive.
Tata Group Stocks Fall After Thursday Rally
Not every part of the market participated in Friday’s gains.
Several Tata Group stocks, including Tata Investment, Tata Chemicals, Tata Motors and TCS, fell between roughly 2.5% and 7% in early trade after strong gains in the previous session.
That selling prevented the headline indices from rising more sharply.
What Is the Market Story Today?
The market has opened in the green.
There is no crash.
Sensex is up around 160 points and Nifty has moved above 23,300.
Falling crude oil and strong global markets are supporting buyers, while FII selling and weakness in selected Tata Group stocks are limiting the rally.
For the rest of Friday’s session, Nifty 23,400 will be the key level to watch.
