NEW YORK, UNITED STATES | August 27, 2026 —
The Mohan Bhagwat US visit row intensified Thursday after the X account of the organization promoting his upcoming New York event became unavailable, adding a fresh twist to a controversy already involving calls for his visa to be revoked, opposition from New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a sharp response from India.
American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue, or AHEAD, is involved in organizing the Universal Oneness Celebration featuring Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat in New York on August 29.
Its X handle, @AheadForum1, was shown as suspended ahead of the event.
AHEAD said it believes the suspension may have occurred in error and maintained that its communications have promoted peace, harmony and interfaith dialogue.
Importantly, X has not publicly established a political reason for the suspension, so any suggestion that the account was blocked because of the controversy surrounding Bhagwat would be premature.
USCIRF Calls for Bhagwat’s Visa to Be Revoked
The account suspension comes amid a much larger political dispute surrounding Bhagwat’s US visit.
The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, an independent bipartisan federal advisory body created by Congress, issued a statement on August 26 expressing concern about Bhagwat’s visit.
USCIRF Chair Asif Mahmood urged the US government to consider targeted sanctions against RSS members and Indian officials it alleges are involved in religious-freedom violations.
The commission specifically recommended revoking Bhagwat’s visa and making him ineligible for future US entry.
However, this distinction is crucial: USCIRF does not itself control US visas or impose sanctions. Its recommendations are not binding on the Trump administration.
There has been no announcement that Bhagwat’s visa has been revoked.
India Rejects USCIRF’s Charges
India has strongly rejected USCIRF’s criticism.
The Ministry of External Affairs has repeatedly accused the commission of presenting a biased and distorted picture of religious freedom in India.
The Indian government maintains that the country is a pluralistic democracy in which constitutional protections apply across religious communities.
The RSS has also rejected accusations that it promotes intolerance, describing itself as a cultural organization focused on social unity, national service and Hindu cultural identity.
The dispute therefore reflects sharply competing narratives over the RSS and religious freedom in India.

Zohran Mamdani Opposes Bhagwat’s New York Event
The controversy had already escalated after New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly said he does not support the event involving Bhagwat.
Mamdani criticized the RSS’s ideology while acknowledging that New York City may not have legal authority to cancel a privately organized event.
His remarks triggered a wider debate among sections of the Indian-American community.
Some groups have opposed Bhagwat’s appearance, while supporters argue that organizers have the right to hold a peaceful private gathering and that participants should not face discrimination because of their political or religious views.
That disagreement has turned the August 29 program from a diaspora gathering into a politically sensitive event attracting attention in both India and the United States.
Security Advisory Issued Ahead of Event
The Hindu American Foundation has also issued a community advisory ahead of the New York gathering, urging attendees to remain vigilant, maintain situational awareness and keep interactions civil.
There has been heightened attention around possible demonstrations and counter-protests.
The advisory does not by itself indicate that authorities expect violence, but it underlines the unusually charged atmosphere surrounding the event.
Bhagwat is visiting the United States as part of international outreach during the RSS centenary period.
The Universal Oneness Celebration has been promoted by organizers as a multicultural and interfaith gathering focused on dialogue, shared values and social harmony.
Why the X Suspension Is Now Important
The suspension of AHEAD’s X account adds a fresh digital-platform dimension to what was already a diplomatic and political controversy.
For now, three separate developments should not be conflated:
- USCIRF has recommended visa revocation and sanctions.
- Mayor Mamdani has opposed the event but has not cancelled it.
- X has suspended the organiser’s account, but no public evidence currently establishes that the action was politically motivated.
AHEAD says it is confident that its posts complied with X’s policies and believes the suspension could be a mistake.
Unless X provides a specific explanation, the reason for the action remains unclear.

All eyes will now be on the August 29 New York event.
