Ukraine Claims Deep Strike on Russian Energy Facility More Than 2,500 Kilometers Away
Ukraine strike on Tobolsk marked a new milestone in Kyiv’s expanding long-range campaign, Ukrainian officials claimed, after an energy and petrochemical facility in Russia’s western Siberian region was targeted more than 2,500 kilometers from Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said the operation demonstrated that its forces were gaining the ability to reach strategic Russian infrastructure previously considered safe because of its distance from the front line.
In a statement posted on X, the ministry said Ukrainian defense forces had struck another facility connected to Russia’s oil-processing industry, this time in the Siberian city of Tobolsk.
The ministry did not provide detailed information about the weapons used, the operation’s launch point or the full extent of the damage. Independent confirmation of the precise battlefield claims was not immediately available.
Reports identifying the target described it as a major petrochemical complex rather than a conventional oil refinery. The distinction is significant because the Ukrainian statement characterized the facility more broadly as part of Russia’s oil-refining industry.
Kyiv Says Russia No Longer Has a Secure Strategic Rear
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said the Tobolsk operation showed that Russia could no longer assume its distant industrial and strategic facilities were beyond the reach of Ukrainian attacks.
According to Kyiv, Ukraine’s expanding long-range capabilities are bringing a growing number of facilities supporting Russia’s military operations within striking distance.
The ministry described the attack as evidence that Ukraine had achieved a new level of deep-strike capability. It claimed that Russia, for the first time in its history, no longer possessed a completely secure “strategic rear.”
That assertion reflects Ukraine’s position and has not been independently established. Russia maintains an extensive industrial and military network spread across a vast territory, while the effectiveness and sustainability of Ukraine’s deepest strikes remain difficult to assess.
Ukraine Vows to Continue Long-Range Operations
Kyiv indicated that it intended to continue conducting attacks deeper inside Russian territory.
The Foreign Ministry said the campaign was designed to increase the cost of continuing the war and persuade Moscow that peace was the only viable path forward.
Ukraine has repeatedly argued that energy and industrial facilities supporting Russia’s military and wartime economy are legitimate targets. Moscow, meanwhile, has condemned Ukrainian attacks inside Russia and accused Kyiv of endangering civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The Tobolsk claim comes as both countries continue to conduct aerial operations far beyond the immediate front line, increasingly relying on drones, missiles and guided bombs.
Russia Reports Strikes on Ukrainian Military Positions
Russia also claimed that its forces carried out airstrikes Tuesday against Ukrainian military positions and drone-control facilities in the Donetsk, Kharkiv and Sumy regions.
The Russian Defense Ministry said reconnaissance operations had identified temporary Ukrainian troop deployment sites and a control center for unmanned aerial vehicles.
According to Moscow, Russian Aerospace Forces subsequently attacked the identified targets with FAB-250 aerial bombs and LMUR air-launched guided missiles.
The ministry said the FAB-250 bombs were fitted with universal glide-and-correction modules. Such equipment is intended to extend a bomb’s range and improve its accuracy, allowing aircraft to release the weapon from farther away.
Russia claimed the strikes hit temporary deployment points in Russian-held parts of the Donetsk region and in the Kharkiv region, along with a drone-control facility in the Sumy region.
Ukraine did not immediately provide confirmation of the reported damage or casualties from those attacks. Moscow’s claims about the targets and results could not be independently verified.
Long-Range Attacks Expand the Geography of the War
The competing statements underscore the widening geographical scope of the Russia-Ukraine war.
While Russian forces continue attacking targets across Ukraine, Kyiv has increasingly sought to reach energy, industrial and military facilities deep inside Russian territory. Ukraine says these operations are intended to weaken the infrastructure supporting Moscow’s war effort.
However, official wartime accounts from both governments frequently differ, and complete information about targets, damage and casualties is often unavailable immediately after an attack.
The Tobolsk operation, if confirmed in full, would demonstrate Ukraine’s ability to reach a target deep in western Siberia and far beyond the areas commonly associated with cross-border attacks.
