Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan Expected to Sign Joint Defense Pact Amid ‘Islamic NATO’ Debate
Turkey Saudi Pakistan Defense Pact: Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan are expected to sign a joint defense agreement in Saudi Arabia on Friday, marking a significant step toward expanding military cooperation among the three countries. The anticipated agreement has renewed discussion in strategic circles about the possibility of a broader regional security framework, often described by commentators as an “Islamic NATO.”
While the phrase has gained attention in public debate, Pakistani officials have repeatedly stated that the proposed security cooperation is not directed against any specific country and is intended to strengthen regional stability and reduce dependence on external powers.
Defense Cooperation Expected to Expand
According to officials familiar with the discussions, the agreement is expected to enhance defense coordination, military cooperation, and strategic collaboration between the three nations.
Although full details of the pact have not yet been made public, it is viewed as another step toward closer security ties among key regional partners.
Earlier Statements Suggested a Broader Alliance
Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif indicated in an interview earlier this year that the existing defense and economic partnership between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia could eventually expand to include Turkey and Qatar.
He said discussions were underway at multiple levels and that efforts to finalize the framework were continuing.
According to Asif, broader participation could create a stronger platform for regional defense cooperation as well as economic collaboration.
Pakistan: Pact Is Not Directed Against Any Country
Pakistani officials have consistently emphasized that the proposed defense arrangement is not intended to target any nation.
Khawaja Asif said the primary objectives are to:
- Strengthen regional peace and stability
- Enhance defense cooperation among participating countries
- Reduce reliance on external powers in security matters
He added that while international cooperation remains important, regional countries should also develop mechanisms to safeguard their own collective security interests.
Strategic Defense Agreement Signed Last Year
The latest initiative follows a Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement signed last year during Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Saudi Arabia.
In a joint statement issued after that meeting, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening nearly eight decades of diplomatic ties, Islamic solidarity, shared strategic interests, and defense cooperation.
The agreement also included commitments to expand collaboration on mutual security issues.
India Previously Said It Would Assess the Agreement
Following last year’s defense agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, India stated that it would carefully evaluate its potential implications.
At the time, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India would assess the agreement’s possible impact on national security as well as regional and global stability.
He reiterated that India remains fully committed to safeguarding its national security and strategic interests.
Regional Significance
The anticipated defense agreement comes at a time of evolving geopolitical dynamics across the Middle East and South Asia.
Defense analysts are expected to closely watch the scope of the agreement, particularly whether it remains focused on bilateral and trilateral military cooperation or evolves into a broader regional security framework involving additional countries.
