Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi called for an independent high-level committee monitored by the Supreme Court to investigate the alleged police action against student protesters during a demonstration held at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 20.
In a post on social media platform X, Gandhi said students deserved justice and demanded an impartial inquiry into the alleged use of force by police personnel.
He also shared a video that he said showed police using batons against demonstrators and an individual in plain clothes allegedly pushing a student carrying the Indian national flag to the ground.
The demand came as opposition MPs staged a protest near Makar Dwar in the Parliament complex over the alleged police action and allegations concerning donations made to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Nishikant Dubey Defends Home Minister Amit Shah
Speaking to reporters inside the Parliament complex, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey dismissed opposition criticism of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Dubey said that it was “anti-national forces trying to divide the country” that feared the Home Minister and asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people had entrusted Shah with the responsibility of maintaining national security.
JP Nadda Says Government Ready for Every Discussion
Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Union Health Minister JP Nadda accused the opposition of repeatedly disrupting parliamentary proceedings instead of participating in constructive debate.
Nadda said the Narendra Modi-led government remained willing to discuss every issue raised by the opposition, both during the current session and in previous sessions.
He stated that the government had already agreed to discussions requested by the opposition and announced that Union Minister Jitendra Singh would initiate a debate at 2:00 PM. He also noted that a bill was scheduled for discussion later in the day.
According to Nadda, the opposition frequently changed its position because it lacked substantive issues to raise.

Trinamool Congress MP Kirti Azad questioned whether the proposed amendments would effectively prevent future examination paper leaks.
During the Rajya Sabha debate, Azad argued that merely increasing the penalty from ₹1 crore to ₹10 crore and enhancing prison terms would not solve the underlying problem unless those responsible for repeated leaks were held accountable.
He also criticized the government’s handling of other issues while making political allegations regarding the Ram Temple donation controversy.

Members of the Samajwadi Party (SP) staged a protest inside the Parliament complex over allegations related to donations made at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
