So when should Krishna Janmashtami actually be celebrated in 2026?
The clear answer for most devotees is: Sri Krishna Janmashtami will be observed on Friday, September 4, 2026.

Why Is September 4 the Main Janmashtami Date?
Janmashtami is traditionally observed on Krishna Paksha Ashtami of the Bhadrapada month.
Lord Krishna is believed to have been born at midnight under Rohini Nakshatra.
In 2026, Ashtami Tithi begins during the early hours of September 4 and continues past midnight.
Rohini Nakshatra also remains in effect for most of September 4, although it ends before the main Nishita period in several cities.

When Should Janmashtami Fast Be Broken?
Devotees observing a full Janmashtami fast traditionally perform Parana after completion of the prescribed religious conditions.
For New Delhi, the traditional Parana can be performed after sunrise on September 5, with ISKCON calculations indicating a time after approximately 6:01 AM.
However, another widely followed practice allows devotees to break the fast after completing the midnight Janmotsav and Nishita Puja.
Those observing a strict religious fast should follow their family tradition, temple or trusted local Panchang.
How to Perform Krishna Janmashtami Puja
Devotees generally begin preparations during the day while observing a fast.
