India Coal Production July 2026 recorded strong year-on-year growth, reflecting sustained momentum in the country’s mining sector and reinforcing India’s efforts to strengthen energy security. According to the Ministry of Coal, provisional coal production reached 69.75 million tonnes (MT) in July 2026, marking a 7.51% increase from 64.88 MT recorded in July 2025.
The ministry attributed the growth primarily to higher production by Coal India Limited (CIL) and continued improvements across the coal sector.
Coal Dispatch Registers Double-Digit Growth
Coal dispatch witnessed even stronger growth during the month.
According to the ministry, coal dispatch increased by 17.34% year-on-year, reaching 86.33 million tonnes (provisional) in July 2026, compared with 73.57 million tonnes during the same month last year.
Officials said the sustained increase in production and dispatch demonstrates the government’s continued efforts to ensure adequate coal availability while improving operational efficiency throughout the sector.
Strong Performance in the First Four Months of FY 2026-27
During the April-July period of FY 2026-27, India’s coal sector maintained healthy growth.

The figures indicate steady demand from power generation, steel, cement, and other core industries that rely heavily on domestic coal supplies.
Coal India Remains the Largest Contributor
State-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) continued to account for the largest share of the country’s coal production.

- Dispatch: 63.67 million tonnes

Additionally, Coal India’s cumulative dispatch between April and July FY 2026-27 increased by 6.81% compared with the same period in the previous fiscal year.
The company continues to play a central role in meeting the country’s growing energy requirements.

The Ministry of Coal reiterated its commitment to sustaining production growth, ensuring uninterrupted coal supplies, and reducing India’s dependence on imported coal.
Officials said continued improvements in mining operations, logistics, and dispatch efficiency are helping strengthen domestic coal availability while supporting India’s expanding economy.
