Ambani Family Retains Top Spot as Adani Leads First-Generation Businesses

The Hurun India family business list 2026 has ranked the Ambani family as the country’s most valuable established business family for the third consecutive year, while the Gautam Adani family leads a separate ranking of first-generation enterprises.

Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, was valued at approximately ₹25.8 lakh crore despite recording an 8.5% decline over the year, according to the 2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses List.

The Kumar Mangalam Birla family ranked second among established family businesses with a valuation of ₹8.14 lakh crore. The Jindal family followed in third place at ₹8.02 lakh crore.

The Adani family led Hurun’s newly highlighted first-generation business category with a valuation of ₹19.6 lakh crore. The Sunil Bharti Mittal family, associated with Bharti Airtel, was second in that category at ₹12.1 lakh crore.

These figures represent the estimated value of the businesses associated with each family, not necessarily the personal net worth or immediately available wealth of individual family members.

The rankings separate established multigenerational family enterprises from first-generation businesses. Therefore, Adani and Mittal should not be described as third and fourth in the main established-family ranking.

Adani Tops First-Generation Category

The Gautam Adani family emerged as the most valuable first-generation business family, with its businesses valued at ₹19.6 lakh crore.

Sunil Bharti Mittal’s family secured second place in this category with a value of ₹12.1 lakh crore. The Dilip Shanghvi family, associated with Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, ranked third at ₹4.55 lakh crore.

Top 300 Businesses Valued at ₹138 Lakh Crore

India’s 300 most valuable family businesses were collectively valued at $1.46 trillion, or approximately ₹138 lakh crore, as of June 30, 2026.

Anas Rahman Junaid, founder and chief researcher at Hurun India, said that if the combined businesses were treated as a country, their value would be comparable to the world’s 18th-largest economy. Hurun said the figure exceeded the gross domestic product of countries including the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Poland.

The comparison is illustrative: corporate valuation and national GDP are different economic measurements and should not be treated as directly equivalent.

The combined value of the businesses increased 27.5% from the 2024 edition. The top 300 added nearly ₹30 lakh crore over two years, equivalent to an average of approximately ₹4,076 crore per day.

The companies collectively employ more than 5.4 million people. According to the report, they generated ₹56 lakh crore in revenue and contributed ₹1.9 lakh crore in taxes.

Ahuja Family Records Fastest Percentage Growth

The Ahuja family, which owns garment exporter Shahi Exports, registered the highest percentage increase over three years.

Its business valuation climbed 352% to ₹37,500 crore, making it the fastest-growing family enterprise in percentage terms among those covered by the report.

The Shashikant Bhalchandra Garware family, associated with Garware Hi-Tech Films, recorded the sharpest improvement in rank. It advanced 61 places after its business value increased 300% to ₹15,600 crore.

Hurun linked Garware’s performance partly to the company’s shift toward higher-margin specialty films and significant profit growth since fiscal 2023.

Jindal Family Creates the Most Value

The Jindal family recorded the largest absolute increase in business value over the three-year period.

Its valuation rose by ₹3.3 lakh crore, or 70%, to ₹8.02 lakh crore. The gain helped the family secure third place among India’s established family businesses.

The Anil Agarwal family followed with an increase of ₹3.03 lakh crore. Its business valuation rose 212% to ₹4.45 lakh crore.

Businesses associated with the Kumar Mangalam Birla family added ₹2.75 lakh crore, while the Mahindra family registered an increase of ₹1.69 lakh crore.

The results indicate that metals, engineering, manufacturing and other industrial sectors produced several of the ranking’s largest gains.

Report Highlights Expanding Economic Influence

Hurun’s latest ranking illustrates the scale of family-controlled companies in India and the growing influence of newer entrepreneurial groups.

Around 70% of the established businesses on the list are led by second-generation family members. The ranking also includes 57 third-generation and 20 fourth-generation enterprises, reflecting the increasing importance of succession planning and professional management.

Although the Ambani family retained a substantial lead, the rapid expansion of businesses led by the Adani, Mittal, Ahuja, Garware and Jindal families demonstrates that value creation is taking place across both established groups and newer entrepreneurial enterprises.
