NEW DELHI, India | October 7, 2026 — Getting home for the festivals could require a bigger budget—or a more flexible itinerary—for Delhi-NCR residents. Diwali Chhath travel faces growing pressure as regular trains toward Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh show long waiting lists, while reported Delhi–Patna airfares for selected November departures approach ₹20,000 one way.
An October 7 Amar Ujala report placed the starting airfare for Delhi–Patna travel on November 10 at approximately ₹20,000. It also reported Delhi–Dubai starting fares of around ₹15,000 during the same period.
However, these figures represent reported booking snapshots. They do not establish the fare every passenger will find, and the comparison does not confirm identical baggage allowances, flight timings or booking conditions.
For families planning their journey, the immediate question is how to secure a workable route without mistaking a waiting-list ticket for confirmed accommodation.
Bihar-Bound Trains Face Heavy Booking Pressure
The report described limited availability on major services connecting Delhi with Bihar.
On the Sampoorna Kranti Express, it reported “No Room” in the economy category for November 1–4, alongside waiting lists in sleeper and AC three-tier for November 1–8.
It also described long waiting lists in AC three-tier on the Tejas Rajdhani Express for selected early-November dates. Meanwhile, passengers considering the Bihar Sampark Kranti and Swatantrata Senani services face similar booking constraints.
These examples do not mean that every train or class has closed bookings. Availability depends on the journey date, boarding station, destination and reservation category.
Therefore, travelers should check the exact combination they intend to book rather than rely on a general route summary.
Ranchi Travelers Also Need Alternatives
The pressure extends beyond Patna and Darbhanga.
The same report cited waiting-list availability in AC three-tier on the New Delhi–Ranchi Rajdhani Express for November 6. It also described “Regret” status in several categories on the Jharkhand Swarna Jayanti Express.
When the booking system displays “No Room” or “Regret,” passengers cannot obtain a reservation in that displayed category at that moment. However, they should check other dates and services separately.
A family traveling together should also establish whether every passenger has accommodation before committing to onward arrangements.
Why the Patna–Dubai Fare Comparison Needs Context
The reported Delhi–Patna fares stand well above the ₹5,000–₹6,300 range cited for August. Nevertheless, that earlier range is a historical comparison, not a fare currently available for November travel.
The Patna–Dubai comparison illustrates the size of the quoted price difference. It does not mean that every domestic ticket costs more than an international journey.
Airlines can quote different prices for different departure times, fare categories and remaining inventory. Additionally, baggage, cancellation conditions and connections can change the practical value of a ticket.
Consequently, compare the final payable amount before purchasing. For a family, even a modest difference per passenger can materially affect the total travel budget.
Special Trains Offer Additional Options
Festival specials could provide alternatives for passengers who cannot find suitable regular services.
Recent railway reporting lists additional services on routes including New Delhi–Supaul, Anand Vihar–Bhagalpur, New Delhi–Howrah and Amritsar–Barauni.
However, an announcement does not guarantee that a particular departure has available seats. Travelers must confirm the train number, operating date, boarding station, class and booking status.
The supplied report also mentions additional approvals and proposed clone services. Passengers should verify their operational details through official railway announcements before planning around them.
A Waiting-List E-Ticket Is Not a Confirmed Journey
IRCTC states that when every passenger on an e-ticket remains waitlisted after chart preparation, their names drop from the reservation chart. Those passengers cannot board using that fully waitlisted e-ticket.
This rule differs from a booking with confirmed or RAC accommodation. Mixed-status family bookings also require separate attention.
Therefore, check the final PNR status instead of assuming that purchasing an e-ticket guarantees travel.
Five Checks Before Booking Your Festival Journey
Before paying, travelers should:
- Compare nearby dates: Check whether leaving earlier or returning later produces a workable option.
- Search festival specials: Verify the exact departure and availability.
- Consider alternate stations: Include the cost and time of onward travel.
- Review the complete airfare: Check baggage and cancellation conditions.
- Plan the return journey: Avoid securing only the outward leg when the return date is fixed.
If you consider another airport or an indirect route, calculate the complete door-to-door journey. A cheaper ticket may lose its advantage once transfers and overnight accommodation enter the budget.
The practical priority is a verified itinerary: confirmed accommodation, realistic connections and a total price the household can manage. Reported fare spikes and crowded trains make that preparation especially important this festival season.
