NEW DELHI, India | September 28, 2026 — Bank strike deferred: customers can plan for normal branch banking on Monday after unions postponed their proposed September 28–30 nationwide walkout. Reports citing the United Forum of Bank Unions’ September 27 circular said the decision followed Sunday-night talks with the Indian Banks’ Association. The development changes the outlook for customers who had prepared for three days of disruption. However, local branch schedules still apply, and the agreement does not introduce a five-day banking week.

THE 60-SECOND BRIEF

  • Strike status: Unions have deferred the proposed September 28–30 action.
  • Banks today: Branches are expected to follow their applicable working schedules.
  • Saturday holidays: The demand remains under discussion.
  • Next step: An IBA–UFBU committee will examine the issue.
  • Before visiting: Check your branch’s opening hours and transaction cut-off times.

What Happened?

The United Forum of Bank Unions and the Indian Banks’ Association reached an understanding during talks on Sunday night.

Free Press Journal, citing the union circular, reported that the two sides met around 9:30 PM on September 27. They agreed to continue discussions on outstanding demands, prompting the unions to postpone their proposed agitation and strike action.

The decision gives customers relief from the planned walkout. Nevertheless, it leaves the broader dispute open for negotiation.

Are Banks Open Today, September 28?

Banks are expected to operate according to their normal applicable schedules on Monday following the deferment.

The Economic Times reported that State Bank of India had said its branches would remain open on September 28. Customers should therefore check current bank communications when planning their visits.

However, a nationwide strike update cannot confirm the operating status of every branch. Local holidays, branch-specific arrangements and individual service hours may still affect access.

For urgent work, confirm that the relevant counter or service will operate before travelling.

Has the Five-Day Banking Week Started?

The reported understanding does not announce the introduction of a Monday-to-Friday banking schedule.

Instead, a high-level committee comprising IBA and UFBU representatives will examine the demand to declare the remaining Saturdays holidays. It will consider alternatives and consult stakeholders while seeking an acceptable solution.

Customers should therefore continue following their bank’s existing holiday calendar until an applicable notification announces a change.

The distinction matters: an agreement to discuss a demand does not itself implement that demand.

What Else Will the Negotiations Cover?

The talks will also cover the Performance Linked Incentive scheme for officers in Scale IV and above.

According to Free Press Journal’s account of the circular, the IBA will discuss possible modifications with the government to address concerns raised by unions and associations.

Additionally, both sides will take up outstanding issues recorded in their March 8, 2024 meeting minutes. These commitments provide the basis for further negotiations.

What Does “Strike Deferred” Mean?

The unions have postponed the proposed action. The announcement does not establish that every underlying issue has reached a final settlement.

Consequently, customers should distinguish the immediate service update from the longer negotiation process.

Earlier reports warned about possible disruption if the September 28–30 strike proceeded. Those warnings described the position before Sunday night’s development. Customers should now use the latest information when planning their banking work.

What Should Customers Do Before Visiting?

For cash transactions, cheque deposits or document submission, check the relevant service’s opening hours and cut-off time.

Carry the documents your bank requires for the specific request. If the branch has asked for additional paperwork, confirm those requirements beforehand to avoid a second visit.

For pending transactions, ask the bank about the current status. The strike’s postponement does not automatically remove processing requirements or guarantee immediate completion.

Similarly, businesses with time-sensitive instructions should confirm acceptance and processing directly with their bank and retain the acknowledgement.

Will UPI, ATMs and Mobile Banking Work?

Customers can continue using their usual digital banking channels, subject to availability and their bank’s arrangements.

However, the strike decision does not rule out an unrelated technical problem or a cash shortage at an individual ATM.

If a payment fails, check its status before repeating it. For requests that require document verification or a branch employee’s approval, contact the bank rather than assuming an app can complete every step.

What Happens Next?

The next development to watch is a concrete announcement about the committee’s discussions and any resulting agreement.

For now, the September 28–30 strike warning no longer provides a reason by itself to postpone a branch visit. Customers should check local timings and proceed according to their bank’s current instructions.
