GURUGRAM, India | October 10, 2026 — Police detained YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in Gurugram before he could join Saturday’s planned CJP demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The Dhruv Rathee detention became a prominent development in the morning security operation, while a separate report said crime branch personnel questioned him before setting out toward Delhi.
Police sources cited by PTI placed the detention at a residence in Gurugram’s Sector 56. Meanwhile, Amar Ujala reported that three crime branch teams took Rathee to an office, questioned him for approximately an hour and subsequently left for Delhi with him.
However, published accounts differ over the precise location, timing and operational sequence. The available reports establish the detention but do not independently resolve every detail of the transfer.
Police action comes before planned Jantar Mantar gathering
Rathee had intended to participate in the Cockroach Janta Party’s October 10 demonstration, according to reports on his detention.
The movement called the gathering to demand Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR.
Delhi Police had denied permission for the demonstration, citing security concerns and procedural requirements. Officers subsequently detained people attempting to reach gathering points and tightened security around central Delhi.
Rathee’s detention therefore occurred within a wider operation ahead of the proposed protest. However, that context does not establish the specific legal grounds on which police held him.
Report describes an hour of questioning and onward travel
Amar Ujala’s account said three crime branch teams detained Rathee early Saturday, took him to a crime branch office and questioned him for about an hour.
According to that report, personnel contacted Delhi Police before leaving in three vehicles with Rathee. The account described their onward journey toward Delhi via the expressway near Rajiv Chowk.
The reporting did not establish what questions officers asked, what Rathee told them or the destination where they intended to take him.
Consequently, the reported questioning should not be presented as evidence that police accused him of a particular offense.
Location and timing differ across accounts
PTI-based reporting identified Sector 56 as the location of the detention. However, the account describing the crime branch operation referred to Sector 55 before also mentioning Sector 56 elsewhere.
Reports also differed on the time. One placed the operation at approximately 6 AM, while another described police entering the residence closer to 8 AM.
These discrepancies leave parts of the morning sequence unresolved. Until authorities clarify the operation, the most firmly supported description remains that police detained Rathee in Gurugram before the planned demonstration.
Separate reporting said officers had gathered outside the residence overnight and entered after his mother opened the door. Those details come from published accounts rather than a police statement reviewed for this update.
CJP condemns detention and demands release
CJP criticized the detention of Rathee and other activists. In a press release, it called for their immediate release and accused the authorities of attempting to silence dissent over electoral-roll allegations.
That explanation represents the movement’s position. The available material does not establish that police have accepted its account of the operation’s purpose.
Meanwhile, police had already cited security and procedural concerns when refusing permission for the proposed gathering.
The distinction matters because a disagreement over protest restrictions does not, by itself, establish wrongdoing by either an individual participant or the officers involved.
Organizers urge supporters to remain peaceful
Alongside its criticism of police action, CJP issued a protest briefing asking participants to maintain peace and avoid physical confrontations.
The movement urged supporters to respect barricades, stay out of restricted areas and avoid damaging public or private property. It also asked them not to obstruct emergency services.
In addition, the briefing warned against circulating unverified claims or misleading videos. It advised people to document incidents responsibly without interfering with police duties or endangering others.
Those instructions provide context for the organizers’ stated approach to the demonstration, even as authorities continued preventive action.
What remains unclear about Rathee’s status
The reports reviewed for this update describe Rathee as detained. They do not establish a formal arrest, identify specific charges against him or confirm his final location after the reported journey toward Delhi.
Likewise, the detention itself does not prove that he committed an offense.
The next material developments will concern an official explanation of the action, confirmation of where police took him and information about his release or any further proceedings.
For readers following the case, those details matter more than conflicting early timelines. They will determine what happened after police intervened and whether authorities took any additional action.
