NEW DELHI, India | September 1, 2026 —
Hartalika Teej 2026 will be observed on Monday, September 14—not September 15. The Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha Tritiya Tithi will remain in effect at sunrise on September 14, making it the accepted fasting date under the Udaya Tithi tradition.
The morning worship window will be brief because Tritiya will end soon after sunrise. For New Delhi, the Pratahkala Hartalika Puja Muhurat will run from 6:05 a.m. to 7:06 a.m., giving devotees approximately one hour and one minute to complete the principal morning rituals.
Puja timings can differ by several minutes depending on the devotee’s city, sunrise and local panchang. Devotees should therefore verify the final muhurat for their location before beginning the rituals.
Hartalika Teej 2026: September 14 or September 15?
Hartalika Teej will be celebrated on September 14, 2026.
The confusion arises because the Tritiya Tithi begins on September 13 and ends shortly after sunrise on September 14. However, it does not continue until September 15.
According to the New Delhi-based panchang calculation:
- Hartalika Teej date: Monday, September 14, 2026
- Tritiya Tithi begins: 7:08 a.m. on Sunday, September 13
- Tritiya Tithi ends: 7:06 a.m. on Monday, September 14
- Morning puja muhurat: 6:05 a.m. to 7:06 a.m.
- Muhurat duration: One hour and one minute
Tritiya is present at sunrise on September 14. Consequently, the Udaya Tithi rule places the fast and principal worship on that date.
September 15 falls under the following lunar date and is not the prescribed Hartalika Teej fasting day.
Why Is Udaya Tithi Important?
Hindu festivals and fasts are not always determined by the Gregorian calendar date on which a lunar Tithi begins. Many observances follow Udaya Tithi—the lunar date prevailing at sunrise.
Tritiya begins after sunrise on September 13. It remains active at sunrise on September 14 before ending at 7:06 a.m. Therefore, September 14 becomes the principal observance date.
Because the Tithi ends early, devotees planning morning worship should prepare the puja materials in advance.
Hartalika Teej Puja Muhurat in 2026
The recommended Pratahkala worship period in New Delhi is from 6:05 a.m. to 7:06 a.m. on September 14.
Devotees should bathe, clean the worship area and arrange the Shiva-Parvati idols and offerings before the muhurat begins. The main puja, Sankalpa and Hartalika Vrat Katha can then be completed within the available time.
Morning worship is traditionally preferred. Families that follow evening Pradosh Puja may worship according to their regional custom and location-specific panchang.
Sunrise and Pradosh timings change according to location. A muhurat calculated for New Delhi should not automatically be treated as exact for Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Patna, Lucknow or other cities.
Why Is Hartalika Teej Celebrated?
Hartalika Teej honors the devotion and determination of Goddess Parvati and her union with Lord Shiva.
According to the traditional legend, Goddess Parvati wished to marry Lord Shiva and undertook intense penance to fulfill that desire. When her father considered arranging her marriage elsewhere, a female friend took Parvati to a forest so she could continue her worship without interruption.
Parvati is believed to have created a Shivalinga from sand and clay and worshipped Lord Shiva with complete devotion. Pleased by her penance, Shiva accepted her as his consort.
The name “Hartalika” is traditionally linked to two words: “Harat,” referring to being taken away, and “Aalika,” meaning a female friend.
Married women traditionally observe the fast while praying for marital harmony, their spouse’s well-being and family prosperity. Unmarried women may also observe it while seeking a compatible life partner. Individual customs differ by family and region.
Hartalika Teej Vrat and Puja Vidhi
Devotees may follow these commonly observed steps:
- Wake before sunrise, bathe and wear clean traditional clothing.
- Clean the worship area and decorate it with flowers and rangoli.
- Take the Sankalpa to observe the Hartalika Teej fast.
- Install clay or sand representations of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
- Light a ghee lamp and offer water, flowers, fruits and sweets.
- Offer bilva leaves to Lord Shiva.
- Present sindoor, bangles, mehendi, kumkum and other traditional Shringar items to Goddess Parvati.
- Recite Shiva-Parvati prayers and listen to the Hartalika Vrat Katha.
- Perform aarti and pray for peace, health and harmony.
- Complete the fast according to family and regional tradition.
Some devotees remain awake at night and conduct worship during the four Prahars. Others organize group prayers, devotional songs and Vrat Katha recitations.
Is Hartalika Teej a Nirjala Fast?
Many devotees traditionally observe Hartalika Teej as a Nirjala Vrat, abstaining from both food and water. Others follow a fruit-based or water-supported fast according to health, age and family custom.
A strict Nirjala fast is not appropriate for everyone. People with medical conditions or health concerns should follow professional medical guidance and choose a safe form of observance. Devotion does not require anyone to put their health at risk.
