Borussia Dortmund have suffered a major early-season injury blow after Giannis Konstantelias tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, just minutes after scoring on his Bundesliga debut against Hamburger SV.
The 23-year-old Greek midfielder had appeared to be enjoying a dream start to life in German league football.
Konstantelias scored Dortmund’s second goal in first-half stoppage time as BVB beat Hamburg 2-0 at Signal Iduna Park.
But the celebrations quickly turned into concern.
Early in the second half, Konstantelias went down following a midfield challenge. Borussia Dortmund later confirmed that scans had revealed a torn ACL and that their new signing will be unavailable for several months.
Goal at 45+1, Serious Injury Minutes Later
Konstantelias could hardly have imagined a more dramatic Bundesliga debut.
Serhou Guirassy had given Dortmund the lead in the ninth minute before Konstantelias doubled the advantage at 45+1 minutes, finishing a move created by Maximilian Beier.
It was his first competitive goal for Borussia Dortmund.
Then came the devastating moment.
In the 52nd minute, Konstantelias went down after attempting to win possession in midfield and immediately appeared to be in significant discomfort.
He was unable to continue and Marcel Sabitzer replaced him shortly afterwards in the 54th minute.
What initially looked like a worrying knee injury was subsequently confirmed as a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Borussia Dortmund Confirm ACL Tear
Borussia Dortmund said the injury affects Konstantelias’ left knee and will keep the Greece international out for an extended period.
The club has not announced an exact return date.
However, its confirmation that he will miss “several months” means Konstantelias is likely to sit out a significant part of the 2026-27 campaign.
ACL injuries are among the most serious setbacks suffered by footballers because recovery requires extensive rehabilitation before a player can safely return to full training and competitive action.
Dortmund’s priority will now be ensuring that Konstantelias completes his recovery without being rushed back.
Lars Ricken: Dortmund Hit Hard by Injury
Borussia Dortmund Managing Director of Sport Lars Ricken acknowledged the scale of the setback.
Ricken said Konstantelias had already shown in a very short period why Dortmund regarded him as an outstanding addition to the squad.
For the club, however, attention has now shifted completely from his promising start to his rehabilitation.
Dortmund have made clear that the player will receive the club’s full support during the recovery process.
Dream Start Turns Into Nightmare
The injury is particularly painful because Konstantelias had started his Dortmund career so impressively.
He joined BVB from Greek club PAOK during the summer and had already featured as a substitute against Bayern Munich in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.
But the Hamburg game represented his first Bundesliga appearance.
Scoring before half-time appeared to provide the perfect introduction to German league football.
Instead, less than 10 minutes of match time later, his debut had ended with one of football’s most feared knee injuries.
Dortmund Beat Hamburg 2-0 Despite Late Red Card
The injury overshadowed what was otherwise a positive opening day for Dortmund.
Guirassy opened the scoring after nine minutes before Konstantelias made it 2-0 just before the interval.
Dortmund dominated much of the first half and took that two-goal lead into the break.
Hamburg improved after half-time, while BVB’s task became more difficult when substitute Samuele Inácio received a straight red card in the 77th minute.
Dortmund nevertheless protected their advantage and began the Bundesliga season with three points.
The official attendance at Signal Iduna Park was 81,365.
Could Dortmund Return to the Transfer Market?
Konstantelias’ long absence immediately creates another issue for coach Niko Kovač.
Before the final diagnosis had been announced, Kovač indicated that Dortmund would have to consider what options remained available in the transfer market if their fears of a serious injury were confirmed.
The coach stopped short of promising another signing.
Instead, Dortmund will assess whether the existing squad has enough attacking and creative depth to cover Konstantelias’ absence.
That decision has become more urgent because the summer transfer deadline is approaching.
The club entered the new campaign expecting Konstantelias to play an important creative role, so losing him immediately creates an unexpected gap in Kovač’s squad planning.
Who Can Replace Konstantelias?
Dortmund still possess several attacking and midfield options.
Marcel Sabitzer replaced Konstantelias against Hamburg, while Maximilian Beier, Konstantinos Karetsas and other attacking players give Kovač tactical alternatives.
However, replacing Konstantelias is not simply about finding another body in the squad.
The Greek midfielder was signed to add creativity, close control and attacking movement between midfield and the forward line.
His encouraging early performances suggested that he could quickly become an important player for Dortmund.
That makes the timing of the injury especially damaging.
A Brutal Beginning to His Bundesliga Career
Football can change extraordinarily quickly.
At 45+1 minutes, Giannis Konstantelias was celebrating his first Borussia Dortmund goal in front of more than 81,000 supporters.
By the early stages of the second half, he was leaving the pitch injured.
A day later, the diagnosis confirmed the worst fears: a torn ACL and several months away from football.
Dortmund have started their Bundesliga season with a victory.
But for one of their most exciting summer arrivals, the new campaign has been put on hold almost as soon as it began.
