The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the deadline for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Delhi for the second time. Under the revised schedule, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will continue door-to-door voter verification until August 17, 2026, giving eligible residents additional time to complete the verification process.
The Commission said the extension is intended to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the electoral roll.
Revised SIR Schedule for Delhi
According to the Election Commission, the updated timeline is as follows:
- Door-to-door verification by BLOs: Until August 17, 2026
- Publication of Draft Electoral Roll: August 24, 2026
- Claims and Objections Period: August 24 to September 23, 2026
- Last Date for Disposal of Claims and Objections: October 22, 2026
- Final Electoral Roll Publication: October 27, 2026
Verification Process Progress
The Election Commission stated that the Special Intensive Revision has made significant progress.
Key updates include:
- Enumeration forms have been distributed to the majority of 1.45 crore registered voters in Delhi.
- More than 62% of the submitted forms have already been digitized.
Officials said the additional time will help complete verification for voters who have not yet submitted the required documents or whose details are still pending.
Why Was the Deadline Extended?
The Commission explained that the extension was granted to provide every eligible citizen with sufficient opportunity to ensure their name is included in the voters’ list.
This is the second extension of the SIR exercise in Delhi. Earlier, the verification process had already been extended by 10 days.
Challenges Faced During Verification
Reports indicate that many residents who settled in Delhi after 2002 have faced difficulties locating older records required during the verification process.
Booth Level Officers have also encountered operational challenges, including:
- Address verification issues
- Difficulty locating residents in large residential complexes
- Incomplete or outdated voter information
- Delays in collecting and processing enumeration forms
The Election Commission said it continues to monitor the exercise to ensure maximum voter participation and accurate electoral rolls ahead of future elections.
SIR Exercise Began on June 30
The Special Intensive Revision process in Delhi began on June 30, 2026.
Initially, BLOs were scheduled to complete house-to-house verification and collection of enumeration forms by July 29, but the timeline has now been extended to August 17 to accommodate pending cases.
