NEW DELHI, INDIA — August 17, 2026
The UGC-NET 2026 re-exam for English, Commerce and Sociology will be conducted on September 9 and 10 after an official inquiry uncovered extensive factual, typographical, translation and language-related errors in the three question papers.
The National Testing Agency said the defects were too serious to be resolved by merely deleting disputed questions after the answer-key challenge process. It has therefore ordered fresh examinations for candidates who appeared in the three affected subjects.
Candidates will not have to pay an additional examination fee. Information about exam cities, centers and admit cards will be issued separately through the official NTA and UGC-NET websites.
The results of the remaining 84 subjects will be processed according to the existing schedule and will not be delayed by the three re-examinations.
UGC-NET 2026 Re-Exam Schedule
| Subject | Re-exam date | Shift | Examination time |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | September 9, 2026 | Shift 1 | 9 a.m.–12 noon |
| Commerce | September 9, 2026 | Shift 2 | 3 p.m.–6 p.m. |
| Sociology | September 10, 2026 | Shift 1 | 9 a.m.–12 noon |
The dates and shifts were confirmed in an official NTA public notice issued on August 16.
Why Is NTA Conducting the Three Papers Again?
NTA administered the UGC-NET June 2026 examination between June 22 and June 30 for 87 subjects.
After the examination, the agency received multiple complaints concerning the quality and accuracy of the English, Commerce and Sociology question papers. NTA subsequently formed a committee to investigate the reported defects.
The committee found errors across several categories rather than a limited number of disputed answers. It concluded that the papers did not meet the standards required for a fair and error-free national examination.
According to the official notice, the investigation identified:
- Factual inaccuracies
- Typographical mistakes
- Translation errors
- Misspelled names of prominent scholars
- Garbled or incorrectly presented book titles
- Problems in the wording of question stems
- Grammatical mistakes
- Gender and number agreement errors
- Punctuation problems
- Nonstandard or invented terms for established concepts
- Repetition of a significant number of previously administered questions
NTA said defects on this scale could not be adequately corrected by dropping individual questions after candidates submitted challenges.
Why Was a Re-Exam Considered Necessary?
In many competitive examinations, an incorrect question can be removed or marks can be adjusted after subject experts review objections. NTA concluded that this approach would not be sufficient for the three affected UGC-NET subjects.
The errors involved not only disputed answers but also question construction, language, translation and academic terminology. Repetition of a substantial number of earlier questions added another concern.
The committee recommended conducting new papers in the interest of fairness and accuracy. NTA accepted that recommendation and formally announced the re-examination.
Will Candidates Have to Pay Again?
No. NTA has explicitly stated that no additional examination fee will be charged to candidates in English, Commerce or Sociology.
The re-exam applies to the candidates affected by the defective June 2026 papers. Instructions concerning eligibility, exam-center allocation and admit cards are expected to be issued separately.
Candidates should monitor their registered email address and the two official websites:
Applicants should avoid relying on unofficial social-media messages or unverified admit-card links.
When Will the City Slip and Admit Card Be Released?
NTA has not announced a specific release date for the re-exam city-information slip or admit card.
The agency said details concerning the examination city, center and admit card would be notified separately on the official website.
The city slip and admit card serve different purposes. A city-information slip tells the candidate where the examination center will be located, while the admit card provides the complete center address, reporting time and candidate instructions.
Candidates should verify the following details after downloading their documents:
- Name and application number
- Subject
- Examination date
- Assigned shift
- Reporting time
- Examination-center address
- Photograph and signature
- Category and identification details
- Instructions for permissible and prohibited items
Any discrepancy should be reported promptly through the official NTA help channels.
Results for the Other 84 Subjects Will Not Be Delayed
NTA said result processing will continue normally for the 84 subjects covered by the answer-key challenge process.
The re-examination of English, Commerce and Sociology will not delay:
- Results for the remaining 84 subjects
- Allocation of Junior Research Fellowship seats
- Assistant Professor eligibility
- Eligibility for admission to Ph.D. programs
- Issuance of applicable electronic certificates
This means candidates in unaffected subjects should continue to follow the existing answer-key and result schedule.
How Will Assistant Professor Eligibility Be Calculated?
NTA has also clarified how the number of qualifying candidates will be determined in the three re-exam subjects.
For eligibility as Assistant Professor, the number of successful candidates will equal 6% of the candidates who appeared in the June 2026 examination or the re-examination, whichever attendance figure is higher.
For example, if more candidates appeared in the original June paper than in the September re-exam, the larger June attendance figure would be used. If the re-exam attendance is higher, that figure would form the basis of the calculation.
This provision is intended to ensure that candidates are not disadvantaged by the requirement to take the examination again.
What Happens to JRF and Ph.D. Eligibility?
Subject-wise allocation for the three affected subjects will continue to follow the rules prescribed in the UGC-NET June 2026 Information Bulletin.
That allocation covers:
- Junior Research Fellowship
- Eligibility for appointment as Assistant Professor
- Eligibility for admission to Ph.D. programs
NTA said that after the re-examination, the numbers already allocated for each subject will not be reduced under any circumstances.
The agency’s clarification is significant because the examination serves three different academic and professional purposes. Depending on performance and applicable eligibility rules, a candidate may qualify for JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility, Ph.D. admission or a combination of these categories.
