Rocky Flintoff Smashes Maiden Senior Century to Break Lancashire’s 136-Year Record
Rocky Flintoff century celebrations carried historic significance Tuesday as the 18-year-old son of former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff became Lancashire’s youngest first-team centurion, breaking a record that had stood for 136 years.
Flintoff produced an explosive 123 from just 76 deliveries against Somerset in the One-Day Cup at Taunton. His innings featured 10 fours and seven sixes as Lancashire amassed a record List A total of 443 for six.
The teenager reached his century from only 65 balls before extending his score to 123. It was his first hundred in recognized senior cricket and another major milestone in a career that has attracted attention since he was 16.
Lancashire went on to dismiss Somerset for 269, completing a commanding 174-run victory. The result also ended Somerset’s hopes of progressing to the tournament’s knockout stage, according to the county’s official match report.
Flintoff Surpasses Archie MacLaren’s Historic Mark
At 18 years and 126 days, Flintoff became the youngest player to score a first-team century for Lancashire.
The previous record belonged to Archie MacLaren, who was 18 years and 256 days old when he scored 108 against Sussex at Hove in August 1890.
Flintoff therefore broke a mark that had survived through several generations of county cricket and some of the most significant changes in the sport’s history.
His achievement also added another notable chapter to the Flintoff family’s association with Lancashire. His father, Andrew, developed into one of England’s leading all-rounders and played a central role in several of the national team’s most memorable victories.
Flintoff and Jennings Power Lancashire to 443
Rocky came to the crease with Lancashire at 138 for three and joined captain Keaton Jennings in a match-defining fourth-wicket partnership.
The pair added 214 runs, transforming a strong foundation into a daunting total. Jennings scored 156 from 127 balls, while Flintoff accelerated aggressively through the middle and closing stages of the innings.
Rocky combined conventional stroke play with powerful hitting, particularly through the leg side. His seven sixes reflected the attacking approach often associated with his father, although the younger Flintoff is establishing his own identity as a top-order and middle-order batter.
His innings helped Lancashire reach 443 for six from 50 overs—the county’s highest total in List A cricket.
Somerset’s chase never developed enough momentum to threaten the target. Sean Dickson’s team was eventually bowled out for 269, with George Balderson and Tom Aspinwall taking four wickets each for Lancashire.
A Rapid Rise Through England’s Cricket System
Flintoff first gained widespread attention at 16 after producing significant performances for Lancashire’s second team and England at the youth level.
In July 2024, he scored 106 against Sri Lanka to become England Under-19s’ youngest centurion. He had already broken an age record associated with his father by becoming Lancashire Second XI’s youngest century-maker.
Rocky made his List A debut for Lancashire in 2024 at 16 years and 113 days, becoming the youngest player to represent the county. He later scored 88 against Middlesex during that season, which remained his highest senior score until Tuesday’s breakthrough innings.
His progress continued in early 2025 when he scored 126 for the England Lions against a Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane. That performance made him the youngest player to score a century for the Lions, surpassing another record previously held by his father.
Andrew Flintoff was coaching the Lions during that tour, giving the achievement an added family connection. However, Rocky’s century against Somerset was his first for Lancashire’s senior team and his maiden hundred in recognized professional cricket.
Comparisons With Andrew Flintoff Continue
Rocky’s powerful build, right-handed batting style and ability to clear the boundary have led to frequent comparisons with his father.
Like Andrew, he can also bowl medium pace. However, the younger Flintoff has so far concentrated primarily on developing his batting and establishing himself in Lancashire’s senior lineup.
His performances for Lancashire, England Under-19s and the England Lions have strengthened expectations that he could eventually challenge for a place in England’s senior team. Any international selection, however, will depend on his continued development and performances in domestic cricket.
For now, his 123 against Somerset stands as the most significant innings of his senior career—and one that removed Archie MacLaren’s name from a Lancashire age record after 136 years.
