MUMBAI, India | September 2, 2026 —
JioHotstar global launch took a major step on Wednesday as the Reliance-backed streaming platform officially expanded into the United Kingdom, Canada and Singapore, taking one of India’s biggest digital entertainment brands into international markets for the first time under the JioHotstar name.
The September 2 rollout gives viewers in the three countries access to more than 160,000 hours of entertainment across over 12 languages, including Indian films, original series, television programmes, reality shows, regional content, children’s programming and anime.
JioHotstar will also add more than 30,000 hours of fresh content every year as it tries to build a larger global audience beyond India.
The international launch directly targets millions of South Asian viewers living overseas, but JioHotstar also wants to attract audiences looking for entertainment from different Indian languages and cultures.
JioHotstar Replaces Hotstar in Three Countries
The biggest change starts immediately.
JioHotstar has replaced the existing Hotstar service in the UK, Canada and Singapore from September 2.
Existing Hotstar users will not have to start from scratch.
The company will migrate eligible existing subscriptions to corresponding JioHotstar plans, while customers can continue using their existing credentials.
The JioHotstar app will be available through mobile app stores and connected television platforms in all three markets.
This transition gives JioStar a single international entertainment identity instead of continuing with the older Hotstar branding.
160,000+ Hours of Content Lead Global Push
JioHotstar enters overseas markets with an enormous content library.
The platform says viewers will get access to more than 160,000 hours of programming spanning more than 12 Asian languages.
The catalogue includes:
Films
JioHotstar Originals
Popular Indian television shows
Regional-language programming
Reality shows
Non-fiction programmes
Kids’ entertainment
Anime
The platform plans to keep expanding that library rather than rely only on existing titles.
JioHotstar says it expects to add more than 30,000 hours of new content annually.
That strategy gives the company a way to serve different generations of South Asian households while also introducing Indian entertainment to audiences unfamiliar with regional-language content.
Bigg Boss Gets Interactive Global Push
JioHotstar will not simply export a static content catalogue.
The international service includes interactive entertainment features.
Viewers across the UK, Canada and Singapore will be able to participate in live voting for selected editions of Bigg Boss.
Subscribers in the UK and Canada will also gain access to a 24×7 Bigg Boss live feed in supported editions.
Canadian viewers will receive additional access to selected Hindi programming before traditional television broadcast.
This interactive model could become an important differentiator for JioHotstar as global streaming services increasingly compete not only on shows and films but also on viewer engagement.
No Live Sports at International Launch
However, the international version carries one important difference from JioHotstar in India.
The new overseas service does not launch with the major live sports portfolio that drives a substantial part of JioHotstar’s Indian audience.
That means viewers should not assume that events such as the IPL, Indian cricket matches or every sports property available on the Indian service will automatically appear in the UK, Canada or Singapore.
International broadcasting rights often operate under separate agreements.
Existing regional rights can prevent a streaming platform from carrying the same sporting events in every country.
JioStar could expand its sports offering later if rights arrangements allow it, but entertainment forms the core of the initial global rollout.
JioHotstar Announces UK Subscription Prices
JioHotstar has introduced both quarterly and annual subscription options.
In the United Kingdom, the service costs:
£19.99 for three months
£69.99 annually
The annual package offers a lower effective monthly cost for viewers who plan to use the platform throughout the year.
Canada Gets Lower Annual Pricing
In Canada, JioHotstar has priced its plans at:
C$19.99 quarterly
C$49.99 annually
The Canadian annual price stands noticeably below the equivalent UK annual plan in local currency terms.
JioHotstar will also use its interactive entertainment offering to target Canada’s substantial South Asian population.
Singapore Plans Start With Quarterly Option
In Singapore, viewers can choose:
S$29.98 quarterly
S$69.98 annually
The service will operate across mobile devices and connected televisions.
JioHotstar’s strong library of Tamil, Hindi and other Indian-language programming could give it particular relevance in Singapore’s multicultural entertainment market.
Reliance Targets Indian Diaspora
The South Asian diaspora sits at the centre of JioHotstar’s international strategy.
Millions of Indians and people of South Asian origin live across the UK and Canada, while Singapore maintains longstanding cultural and economic links with India.
These viewers already consume substantial amounts of Bollywood, regional cinema, Indian television and digital entertainment.
JioHotstar wants to bring that content together under one platform instead of forcing consumers to use multiple services.
However, the company also sees a bigger opportunity.
It wants viewers without South Asian backgrounds to discover Indian entertainment.
That strategy mirrors the global expansion of Korean, Spanish and Japanese content, which streaming platforms have successfully taken far beyond their original domestic audiences.
Regional Languages Could Become JioHotstar’s Big Weapon
India’s linguistic diversity gives JioHotstar a valuable international advantage.
The platform can offer entertainment across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Marathi and several other languages.
That allows it to target diaspora communities that want more than mainstream Hindi entertainment.
Regional cinema and television have already gained larger audiences through streaming.
JioHotstar can now test whether that appetite extends into international markets at much greater scale.
Reliance Takes Streaming Battle Beyond India
The global launch also marks an important stage in Reliance’s wider digital entertainment strategy.
JioHotstar emerged after the integration of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar operations under JioStar.
In India, the platform has built a massive audience through a combination of entertainment, television programming and sports.
Taking the JioHotstar brand overseas gives Reliance an opportunity to turn that domestic scale into an international streaming business.
The challenge will be very different.
Outside India, JioHotstar must compete for subscribers against global giants such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and other established regional streaming services.
Its advantage lies in a large Indian content catalogue and an audience that already recognises the Hotstar name.
What Changes for Existing Hotstar Users?
Existing Hotstar subscribers in the UK, Canada and Singapore should see their service migrate toward the JioHotstar ecosystem.
Users should check their existing subscription status, compatible devices and migrated plan details when accessing the new platform.
The move effectively retires the standalone Hotstar identity in these three markets and replaces it with JioHotstar.
That gives the company a single brand that it can use for further international expansion.
More Countries Could Follow
The UK, Canada and Singapore represent the opening stage rather than necessarily the end of JioHotstar’s overseas ambitions.
JioStar has positioned the launch as part of a broader effort to build a global entertainment platform.
Success in these first three countries could determine how quickly the company enters additional international markets.
Subscriber growth, content engagement, pricing response and retention will all become important indicators.
Why JioHotstar Global Launch Matters
The JioHotstar global launch marks more than another streaming-app release.
An Indian entertainment platform with enormous domestic scale has now started taking its unified brand directly into major international markets.
JioHotstar enters the UK, Canada and Singapore with a massive catalogue, regional-language depth, interactive viewing and flexible subscription plans.
It also begins without one of its biggest Indian weapons — live sports.
That makes the next phase especially interesting.
If Indian films, television, originals and regional-language programming can attract both diaspora households and wider global audiences, Reliance could turn JioHotstar into one of India’s most important entertainment exports.
September 2, 2026, therefore marks the day JioHotstar’s global ambitions moved from strategy into actual international operations.
