CHENNAI, August 13, 2026
CSK new head coach speculation has intensified after former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed that Eoin Morgan is strongly linked with the vacant position and that Chennai Super Kings could make a decision within a week.
Ashwin, who spent several seasons with CSK during his Indian Premier League career, said his sources had indicated that the former England captain was a serious name in the discussion. However, neither CSK nor Morgan has confirmed formal talks, an interview or an offer.
The five-time IPL champions are searching for a new head coach following Stephen Fleming’s departure after an 18-year coaching tenure. Ashwin also suggested that giving MS Dhoni a larger role in the franchise’s cricket operations may be a more natural solution.
What Did R Ashwin Say About Eoin Morgan?
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said he had heard that Morgan’s name was strongly associated with the CSK head-coach vacancy.
“According to my sources, Eoin Morgan’s name is strongly linked with the CSK head coach position,” Ashwin said. “I think a decision will be made in the next week.”
Ashwin framed the information as something he had learned through his contacts rather than as an official announcement from Chennai Super Kings.
His comments have added Morgan to a growing list of names discussed in connection with the position. Reports have also linked former CSK players and overseas coaches with the job, but the franchise has yet to announce a final shortlist.
Until CSK confirms its decision, Morgan should be described as a reported contender rather than Fleming’s confirmed successor.
Why Does CSK Need a New Head Coach?
Stephen Fleming stepped down in July after one of the longest and most successful coaching tenures in franchise cricket.
The former New Zealand captain joined CSK as a player during the IPL’s inaugural 2008 season before becoming head coach in 2009. His departure ended an 18-year association with the franchise and 17 completed seasons as head coach, excluding the two years when CSK was suspended from the competition.
Under Fleming, Chennai won five IPL championships—in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. The franchise also won the Champions League T20 in 2010 and 2014.
Fleming helped develop CSK’s reputation for stability, clearly defined player roles and long-term squad planning. His working relationship with Dhoni became one of the most successful coach-captain partnerships in IPL history.
CSK and Fleming described the separation as a mutual decision. Details of Fleming’s departure
Does Eoin Morgan Have Head-Coaching Experience?
Morgan has not served as the full-time head coach of a major international side or a leading franchise team.
He retired from professional cricket in 2023 and has since worked primarily in broadcasting as a commentator and cricket analyst. Appointing him would therefore represent his first major assignment as a head coach.
However, Morgan possesses extensive leadership experience. He transformed England’s limited-overs approach after taking over the white-ball captaincy and led the team to its first men’s ODI World Cup title in 2019.
His leadership emphasized aggressive batting, clear roles and a willingness to accept short-term failures in pursuit of failures in pursuit of a more attacking style.
Morgan also has IPL experience. He represented Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab during his playing career. He captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2021 IPL final.
That experience would give him familiarity with the tournament’s pressures, overseas-player management, short preparation periods and high-profile tactical decisions.
Why Could Morgan Appeal to Chennai Super Kings?
CSK are entering a transition period after missing the playoffs in 2024, 2025 and 2026—the first time the franchise has failed to qualify in three consecutive seasons. CSK’s IPL playoff record
The team’s experienced core is aging, while younger players are gradually taking on more significant responsibilities. The next coach will need to balance CSK’s established culture with the demands of rebuilding the squad.
Morgan could offer several potential advantages:
- A modern and aggressive white-ball strategy
- Experience leading high-profile international players
- Familiarity with pressure-heavy tournament cricket
- Strong communication and clearly defined player roles
- Experience changing the mindset of an established team
- Knowledge of the IPL as both a player and captain
His appointment would also signal that CSK wants to introduce a fresh tactical direction after nearly two decades under Fleming.
What Challenges Would Morgan Face as Head Coach?
Morgan’s lack of formal head-coaching experience would be the biggest question surrounding a potential appointment.
Leading an IPL team requires more than match-day tactics. The head coach must coordinate with analysts, talent scouts, medical teams, assistant coaches and franchise management. The role also involves managing players from different countries and balancing international commitments with team preparation.
Morgan would also inherit the difficult task of following Fleming, whose methods became deeply integrated into the franchise.
CSK’s next coach may need to guide the team through a significant auction cycle. Decisions involving player retention, overseas combinations and succession planning could shape the franchise for several years.
Morgan’s leadership credentials are strong, but translating captaincy experience into a full-time coaching structure would be a new test.
Why Did Ashwin Call MS Dhoni the Natural Choice?
Although Ashwin linked Morgan with the vacancy, he said giving Dhoni greater authority might be a more natural option for Chennai.
“Personally, I feel this responsibility will be given to MS Dhoni, and the others will run it,” Ashwin said. “I think that would be the right decision because they are a little late in finding Fleming’s replacement and the mega auction is only a year away.”
Ashwin appeared to envision a structure in which Dhoni provides strategic direction while a coaching and support team handles daily operations.
Such an arrangement could allow CSK to preserve continuity without necessarily appointing Dhoni as the conventional, full-time head coach.
The franchise has not announced whether Dhoni is interested in moving into coaching, mentoring or cricket administration. His exact playing plans for IPL 2027 also remain central to any discussion about a broader role.
Why Would a Larger Dhoni Role Make Sense?
Dhoni has been the defining figure in CSK’s history. He has an extensive understanding of the franchise’s selection philosophy, dressing-room culture and tactical methods.
A senior cricket role for Dhoni could provide:
- Continuity after Fleming’s departure
- Detailed knowledge of current and former CSK players
- Influence during retention and auction planning
- A familiar authority figure for younger players
- Protection of the team culture developed over two decades
However, CSK would still need experienced coaches to manage training sessions, technical development, workload planning and daily tournament operations.
A Dhoni-led cricket structure with an overseas head coach could therefore remain another possibility.
Has CSK Confirmed Morgan as Fleming’s Replacement?
No. CSK has not officially confirmed Morgan’s candidacy or announced its next head coach.
Ashwin’s remarks indicate that Morgan may be under consideration, but they do not establish that the former England captain has accepted the role or is the franchise’s preferred candidate.
The reported one-week timeline also comes from Ashwin’s assessment, not a formal deadline published by CSK.
The final decision could reveal whether Chennai wants an experienced career coach, a recent international captain with modern white-ball ideas or a structure built around Dhoni’s continued influence.
What Would Morgan’s Appointment Mean for CSK?
Selecting Morgan would represent a significant change in direction.
CSK traditionally values continuity, defined roles and experienced decision-makers. Morgan shares some of those leadership qualities, but his aggressive white-ball philosophy could bring a different tactical identity.
Choosing Dhoni for a larger strategic position would offer continuity and institutional knowledge. Selecting Morgan, meanwhile, would introduce an outside voice with a record of transforming a team’s playing culture.
The franchise’s decision will help determine how it rebuilds after three consecutive seasons outside the playoffs—and how it begins the post-Fleming era ahead of IPL 2027.
