MUMBAI, India | October 18, 2026
India’s stock market rally delivered a massive boost to the country’s biggest listed companies last week, adding more than ₹3.65 lakh crore to the combined market capitalisation of nine of the top 10 firms. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) emerged as the biggest winner, gaining more than ₹1.08 lakh crore in market value, while Bharti Airtel, Infosys and Reliance Industries also recorded substantial increases.
The gains came as benchmark indices posted their strongest weekly performances in approximately six months, supported by buying in information technology stocks following encouraging September-quarter earnings and renewed investor interest in heavyweight shares.
However, the rally was not universal. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) was the only company among the top 10 to suffer a decline in market capitalisation during the week.
The latest figures highlight a broad recovery in the market’s largest companies, although investors will need to watch upcoming earnings, global developments and changes in market sentiment to assess whether the momentum can continue.
Sensex Jumps 2,257 Points as Nifty Extends Gains
The BSE Sensex climbed 2,256.94 points, or 3.11%, during the week, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 625.7 points, or 2.77%.
The strong performance reflected renewed buying interest in major stocks, particularly technology companies. According to Ponmudi R, chief executive officer of Enrich Money, the recovery in Indian equities continued during the week, with the benchmark indices delivering their strongest weekly gains in roughly six months.
Better-than-expected September-quarter results helped improve sentiment towards IT stocks. Investors also increased their exposure to major companies, supporting gains across several sectors.
A stronger benchmark index can lift the market capitalisation of leading companies because market value changes with share prices. However, the performance of individual companies can differ considerably from the broader market.
TCS Leads the Top 10 With a ₹1.08 Lakh Crore Gain
TCS was the biggest beneficiary of the rally, with its market capitalisation increasing by ₹1,08,542.63 crore to ₹8,91,134.96 crore.
The rise placed the IT services giant ahead of other members of the top 10 in terms of the weekly increase in market value.
The performance of technology stocks was supported by investor buying following September-quarter earnings. Market participants have been assessing whether corporate spending, demand for technology services and business conditions can sustain a recovery in the sector.
For TCS, the latest market-cap increase reflects a stronger valuation in the stock market. It should not, however, be interpreted as an equivalent increase in the company’s revenue or profit.
The sustainability of the rally will depend on subsequent earnings, management commentary and the outlook for global technology spending.
Bharti Airtel and Infosys Deliver Strong Gains
Bharti Airtel recorded the second-largest increase among the top 10 companies covered in the weekly figures.
Its market capitalisation rose by ₹61,406.53 crore to ₹11,88,815.45 crore, strengthening its position as one of India’s most valuable listed companies.
The increase reflects the change in the market valuation of the telecommunications company over the reporting period. Investors will continue to monitor subscriber growth, average revenue per user, capital expenditure and competition in the telecom sector when evaluating its longer-term prospects.
Infosys also posted a substantial gain. Its market capitalisation increased by ₹55,893.05 crore to ₹4,71,409.41 crore.
The rise added to the strength seen across IT shares during the week. For investors, the key question is whether the sector’s improving market sentiment will be supported by sustained demand, healthy deal pipelines and stronger earnings in subsequent quarters.
Reliance Industries Remains India’s Most Valuable Company
Reliance Industries continued to hold the top position among India’s most valuable listed companies.
Its market capitalisation increased by ₹53,047.56 crore to ₹16,37,437.19 crore, keeping it comfortably ahead of Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank in the reported rankings.
Reliance’s diversified operations span energy, retail, telecommunications and other businesses, making its stock an important component of the Indian equity market.
The latest increase indicates that investors assigned a higher market value to the company over the week. However, its future share-price performance will depend on business results, growth expectations, capital allocation and wider market conditions.
HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank Also Gain
Banking stocks contributed to the broader increase in market value.
HDFC Bank’s market capitalisation rose by ₹32,379.05 crore to ₹11,22,628.07 crore. ICICI Bank recorded an increase of ₹30,769.95 crore, taking its market value to ₹10,02,871.44 crore.
The gains reinforced the strength seen across several heavyweight stocks during the week.
For banking investors, market valuations need to be considered alongside credit growth, deposit mobilisation, asset quality, net interest margins and the cost of funds. A rise in market capitalisation alone does not establish that these underlying indicators have improved.
Bajaj Finance, LIC and SBI Add to the Gains
Other major companies also ended the week with higher market valuations.
Bajaj Finance’s market capitalisation increased by ₹14,786.65 crore to ₹6,11,326.72 crore.
Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) added ₹4,933.50 crore, taking its market value to ₹5,02,204.82 crore.
State Bank of India (SBI) recorded an increase of ₹3,323.07 crore, with its market capitalisation reaching ₹8,87,722.84 crore.
The gains were smaller than those recorded by TCS, Airtel, Infosys and Reliance, but they contributed to the overall rise among the nine advancing companies.
L&T Is the Only Top 10 Company to Lose Market Value
While most of India’s largest companies benefited from the rally, Larsen & Toubro moved in the opposite direction.
L&T’s market capitalisation declined by ₹9,232.26 crore to ₹4,99,725.06 crore, making it the only company in the top 10 to record a weekly decrease.
The decline highlights an important feature of equity markets: a rising benchmark does not guarantee gains for every stock.
Individual share prices respond to company-specific developments, investor expectations, sector trends and broader market conditions. Investors therefore need to assess each company’s performance rather than assume that all large-cap stocks will move in the same direction.
Top 10 Companies: Weekly Market-Cap Changes
The reported figures show how the market-capitalisation rankings and weekly changes compare.
| Company | Weekly change | Market cap at week-end |
| TCS | +₹1,08,542.63 crore | ₹8,91,134.96 crore |
| Bharti Airtel | +₹61,406.53 crore | ₹11,88,815.45 crore |
| Infosys | +₹55,893.05 crore | ₹4,71,409.41 crore |
| Reliance Industries | +₹53,047.56 crore | ₹16,37,437.19 crore |
| HDFC Bank | +₹32,379.05 crore | ₹11,22,628.07 crore |
| ICICI Bank | +₹30,769.95 crore | ₹10,02,871.44 crore |
| Bajaj Finance | +₹14,786.65 crore | ₹6,11,326.72 crore |
| LIC | +₹4,933.50 crore | ₹5,02,204.82 crore |
| SBI | +₹3,323.07 crore | ₹8,87,722.84 crore |
| L&T | −₹9,232.26 crore | ₹4,99,725.06 crore |
The nine companies that gained added approximately ₹3.65 lakh crore in combined market value. After accounting for L&T’s decline, the net increase across all 10 companies was approximately ₹3.56 lakh crore.
Will the Stock Market Rally Continue?
The latest weekly performance has improved the near-term picture for Indian equities, but it does not guarantee that the rally will continue.
Several factors could influence the next phase of the market:
Corporate earnings: Further evidence of healthy quarterly results could support valuations, particularly in the IT sector.
Global demand: Technology spending in major international markets will remain important for Indian IT services companies.
Banking performance: Credit growth, deposit costs and asset quality will influence how investors value major banks.
Foreign investment flows: Changes in overseas investor positioning can affect demand for large-cap Indian shares.
Global economic and geopolitical conditions: Oil prices, international interest rates and geopolitical uncertainty could influence risk appetite.
For retail investors, the important lesson is to avoid making investment decisions solely because the Sensex and Nifty have posted strong weekly gains. Stock selection, valuation, financial performance and individual risk tolerance remain important.
The Bottom Line
India’s largest listed companies enjoyed a powerful week, with nine of the top 10 adding more than ₹3.65 lakh crore in combined market value. TCS led the gains, followed by Bharti Airtel, Infosys and Reliance Industries, while L&T was the sole decliner.
The rally reflects improving sentiment following encouraging IT-sector earnings and broad buying in heavyweight stocks. Whether it develops into a sustained upward trend will depend on future earnings, valuations, investment flows and global market conditions.
For investors, the latest numbers demonstrate the scale of the recovery in large-cap valuations—but the next move will depend on fundamentals, not just momentum.
