England batter Jos Buttler became the first player in men’s T20 cricket to complete 15,000 career runs, reaching the landmark during the second T20I against Sri Lanka at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.
Buttler entered the match needing 30 runs to reach the milestone and scored exactly 30 from 15 balls as England chased down Sri Lanka’s 145 for nine.
The landmark took Buttler past a threshold that had remained just out of reach for West Indies veteran Kieron Pollard, who currently sits on 14,999 T20 runs.
England went on to win the match by six wickets, reaching 146 for four in 12.1 overs and taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Buttler Reaches 15,000 T20 Runs in Cardiff
Buttler opened England’s chase and provided the early acceleration.
His 30-run innings took his overall T20 career tally to exactly 15,000 runs, making him the first batter to reach the mark across recognised domestic, franchise and international T20 cricket.
The achievement covers Buttler’s performances for England as well as his appearances in major franchise and domestic competitions around the world.
At the time of reaching the landmark, Buttler had played 528 T20 matches and 497 innings.

Kieron Pollard Remains One Run Short

Pollard had moved to within one run of the landmark during the Caribbean Premier League but did not get another innings before Trinbago Knight Riders were eliminated.
That left Buttler with the opportunity to become the first player to cross 15,000.
He completed the milestone in Cardiff.
Pollard can still join the 15,000-run club, but Buttler will retain the distinction of being the first batter to reach the figure.
Buttler Had Already Moved to the Top of the T20 Run Charts
Buttler had already been challenging Pollard for the all-time T20 run-scoring lead during 2026.
The pair exchanged positions at the top as both continued playing in international and franchise cricket.
Buttler’s latest innings has now given him the clearest individual landmark in that race.
