The proposed Tarique Rahman India visit has entered a fresh phase of uncertainty as Bangladesh waits for New Delhi’s response to its request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other individuals Dhaka describes as fugitives.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s office has said no final decision has yet been made on his visit to India, despite reports suggesting that he could travel to New Delhi between August 23 and 25.
The uncertainty comes at a sensitive moment in India-Bangladesh relations, with both governments attempting to rebuild ties that were severely strained following Hasina’s removal from power in 2024 and her subsequent stay in India.
A confusing development at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday added another layer of intrigue to the possible visit.
Rashtrapati Bhavan Notice Fuels Speculation
India’s presidential secretariat initially issued a statement saying the regular Change of Guard ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan would not take place on Saturday, August 22, because of a full rehearsal for the ceremonial welcome of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
The statement immediately triggered speculation that Tarique Rahman’s visit had effectively been finalized.
However, the notice was withdrawn less than an hour later.
No immediate public explanation was provided for the unusual reversal.
The withdrawn statement became particularly significant because a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan is normally associated with an official high-level visit by a foreign leader.
The episode has therefore intensified questions over whether preparations had begun for Rahman’s arrival before diplomatic discussions were fully concluded.
Dhaka Says No Final Decision Yet
Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Press Secretary A.A.M. Saleh has said no decision has yet been made regarding the visit.
Dhaka is also waiting for India’s response concerning its requests for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and other individuals wanted by Bangladesh.
The issue has become one of the most difficult points in relations between the neighboring countries.
Bangladesh has repeatedly raised Hasina’s continued presence in India, while New Delhi has acknowledged receiving extradition-related requests and has indicated that such matters are handled through applicable legal and diplomatic processes.
The dispute now appears to be influencing the atmosphere surrounding the first major bilateral visit to India by Tarique Rahman since he became prime minister.
India’s MEA Remains Noncommittal
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has also avoided confirming the visit.
Asked about reports of the Bangladesh prime minister traveling to New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said there was no update to share.
The absence of confirmation from both capitals means reports of an August 23-25 visit should not yet be treated as a finalized official schedule.
Diplomatic discussions between New Delhi and Dhaka have been under way for weeks, but the timing and political environment surrounding the proposed visit remain sensitive.
Sheikh Hasina Extradition Becomes Major Diplomatic Issue
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has remained at the center of India-Bangladesh tensions since she left Bangladesh following the mass uprising that ended her government in August 2024.
She has since been living in India.
Bangladesh has sought her return to face legal proceedings connected to the crackdown on protests during the final period of her government.
Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia in Bangladesh in November 2025 over allegations linked to the deadly suppression of the uprising.
She has rejected the accusations and described the proceedings against her as politically motivated.
For the Tarique Rahman government, the extradition question has become both a legal and politically sensitive domestic issue.

Tarique Rahman Took Power in February
Tarique Rahman became Bangladesh’s prime minister in February 2026 after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a decisive election victory.
His government has repeatedly emphasized that it wants stable and constructive relations with India.
New Delhi has similarly signaled an interest in repairing ties with Dhaka after a turbulent period in the bilateral relationship.
However, the Hasina issue continues to complicate that process.

India and Bangladesh Have Deep Strategic Ties
Despite recent political tensions, India and Bangladesh share extensive economic, security and geographic links.

Bangladesh also plays an important role in India’s connectivity with its northeastern states.
Rail, road and inland-waterway projects developed over the past decade have strengthened economic integration between the two countries.

Trade, border management, investment and regional connectivity all depend on a functioning relationship between New Delhi and Dhaka.
Modi Government Has Signaled Willingness to Engage
India has indicated that Tarique Rahman would receive an appropriate official welcome whenever a visit is finalized.
Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi recently conveyed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanted Rahman to receive an honorable reception during a future India visit.
That message appeared designed to reassure Dhaka that New Delhi remains interested in high-level engagement despite unresolved disagreements.
Bangladesh, however, has emphasized that any visit should take place in an environment conducive to meaningful bilateral discussions.
Dhaka has also indicated that it prefers a dedicated bilateral visit rather than treating the engagement merely as part of a wider multilateral event.
Why the Visit Matters for Modi and Rahman
For both leaders, the proposed meeting carries significant political and strategic importance.
For Prime Minister Narendra Modi, rebuilding strong relations with Bangladesh would help restore stability along India’s eastern frontier and reinforce regional connectivity.
For Tarique Rahman, an India visit would demonstrate that his government can maintain pragmatic ties with New Delhi while simultaneously pursuing Bangladesh’s demands involving Sheikh Hasina.
That balancing act will not be easy.
A visit without progress on sensitive issues could expose Rahman to domestic criticism.
On the other hand, continuing diplomatic distance from India could create economic and strategic costs for Bangladesh.
Could the Visit Still Happen Soon?
A near-term visit has not been formally ruled out.
Diplomatic arrangements for high-level visits can change rapidly, and the Rashtrapati Bhavan episode suggests that preparations may at least have been considered.
However, until New Delhi and Dhaka issue an official schedule, any specific dates remain tentative.
The most important immediate question is whether India’s response to Bangladesh’s extradition request creates enough diplomatic space for the visit to move ahead.
If the two governments can manage the Hasina dispute without allowing it to dominate the entire relationship, Tarique Rahman’s first major bilateral trip to India could become an opportunity to reset ties.
If they cannot, the unresolved extradition dispute could continue delaying high-level engagement.
For now, the Tarique Rahman India visit remains uncertain, with the Sheikh Hasina issue emerging as one of the biggest tests facing relations between the two South Asian neighbors.
