Workshop on Vision Document and 2010-11 Work Plan for Mahatma Gandhi NREGA

INVC,, Delhi,, In order to consolidate the efforts towards an effective implementation of Mahatma Gandhi NREGA, Ministry of Rural Development has organised a Workshop of representatives from states and UTs on Tuesday, the 18th May 2010 at Vigyan Bhavan here to discuss the proposed vision document and the annual work plan for 2010-11. The Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Dr. C.P. Joshi will chair the meeting. The deliberations would provide a platform for the representatives from states and UTs to share the strategy to effectively address constraint in the implementation such as low awareness, delays in payment of wages, limited capabilities of PRIs and district functionaries, inadequate community participation in planning and social audit, the need for ICT enabled NREGA, strengthen management resource support to the programme specially at the Gram Panchayat level. During the course of meeting a time bound framework for implementation of the objective of vision document is likely to be finalised. Among other issues likely to come up for discussion would be framing of district wise plans of action with clear timeline which will provide the framework for district wise monitoring and appraisal. The State team participating in the meeting will consist of Secretary, Rural Development in-charge of Mahatma Gandhi NREGA along with the state level senior officials of the department. It has also been proposed to invite the DPC of one/two districts of the state to share the opportunity while discussing the new strategy. Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act provides for a guarantee of at least 100 days of employment during a financial year to every rural household by providing unskilled manual work in rural areas to those members of the rural household who volunteer to do such work . The program has benefitted over 10.82 crore rural households. images37
