As more and more women experience natural pregnancies due couples working from home in the city, doctors at Miracles Mediclinic & Apollo Cradle Hospital,Gurugramare expecting about 30 per cent rise in cases between December 2020 and February 2021.

“Since the pandemic was declared in March, couples have started working from home which allowed them more time to spend together. It certainly has a calming effect as much as the lack of commute and business travels. Starting end of April, we have seen a steady rise of about 20 per cent in the number of pregnant women as compared to other years – this was the period before they started feeling cooped up due to lockdown restrictions. These expecting mothers will complete their terms starting December. So, we are expecting about 30 per cent more delivery cases from the period of Christmas and New Year till February. This will be in addition to the cases every year where the parents schedule the birth of their child on 1st January,” says Dr Amita Shah, Medical Director & Head (Obs &G ynae) at Miracles Mediclinic& Apollo Cradle Hospital, Gurugram.

Doctors say that last trimester is a very critical period for expecting mothers as their immunity is usually low that makes them more susceptible to infections, including COVID-19.

“The immunity level in expecting mothers is generally lower than normal which makes them an easy target of viruses and bacteria. They are more susceptible to infections otherwise common to women, such as that of the urinary tract. However, in the current circumstances, they remain vulnerable to COVID-19 virus too, especially if any of the family member are going out regularly for work. We advise pregnant women to maintain a physical distance of 6-feet at home, wash their hands upto elbow as frequently as they can, take healthy and fresh food, including fresh fruits, remain active and ensure a sound sleep. Even if someone gets infected, she should not worry – there is no evidence of vertical transmission of COVID yet, which means an infected mother does not pass it on to the baby in her womb. However, if she is under treatment during delivery, then she and her child getspecial attention, especially during breastfeeding and other close contact conditions, and their health parameters are monitored constantly. Our LDR (Labour, Delivery and Recovery) rooms are sanitized at regular intervals and are completely safe,” says Dr Amita Shah.
