“Door-to-door campaign must be required from Residents Welfare Association and Market Traders Associations for behavioral change in the citizen for making New Delhi a Plastic Free Zone. It is a step towards individual and community wellness improvement of the society in letter and spirit.”
This was observed by Member of Parliament, Smt.Meenakshi Lekhi while addressing the “NDMC Dialogue – We and Community wellness”, an interactive session under the Wellness Week organized by New Delhi Municipal Council(NDMC) in collaboration of Sleep Well Foundation at NDMC Convention Centre, New Delhi today.
Smt.Lekhi said that plastic bags and packaging is a hazardous element of our modern society. It is the need of the hour to change our behaviour and habit for using plastics in everyday life. She emphasized to adopt segregation of waste at source every household. It is high time to inculcate reduce, recycle and reuse for conservation of environment and mitigation of the climate change.
Chairman, NDMC Shri Naresh Kumar while interacting with the participants of the Dialogue programme stressed upon the spreading of message of civic sense and responsibility amongst the residents and people visiting New Delhi area. He said that the community should participate in the civic body initiatives like zero waste programme, segregation of waste at source making New Delhi a plastic free zone, scientific disposal of e-waste & Construction & Demolition waste, intensive tree plantation programme etc. He further requested them to co-operate in the survey of digital door number for properties under the NDMC for accruing the benefit of technology.
He stressed that the objective of this Dialogue is to understand and share common interest issues, rules and bylaws of Waste Management, best initiatives and suggestions for fostering a sense of ownership to improve NDMC area.
Secretary, NDMC, Smt.Rashmi Singh said that while the capital city is beautiful and well-maintained, it is felt that social capital, ownership & cohesiveness needs to be enhanced, both amongst the resident and its floating population. She also gives a presentation on the theme of “Make the New Delhi a ‘Plastic Free Zone’. She interacted with the participant on their best initiatives and suggestions.
Earlier yesterday, Member of Parliament, Smt.Meenakashi Lekhi and World renowned Contemporary Artist Padamshree Ms. Anjolie Ela Menon have launched the “Wellness Week” (17-23, June, 2018) by Street Art Project at Shahjahan Road, New Delhi. It was the symbolic opening of wellness week to inculcate pride and ownership among people through the creativity.
On this occasion, a campaign drive “LET’S BE ASLI HERO” was launch at India Gate Lawn to make “Asli Hero” who is responsible in his / her everyday behaviors especially at the public space. The campaign aims to connect with the people and to inspire a responsible behavior, by all at public places. NDMC’s Swachh Interns who have registered themselves with NDMC for a 60 hours Swachh Bharat volunteer programme will be actively participating in the campaign.
The Dialogue was attended by the representatives of Resident Welfare Associations, Market Traders Associations, Embassies, UN Bodies, Head of Schools, School Management Committees, Members, institutions and Industry bodies of New Delhi area.
