Mumbai : Vodafone Idea, one of the major telecommunications companies in India, is preparing to enter the Indian 5G network market. Currently, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel dominate the industry. According to Vodafone Idea’s annual report for the fiscal year 2022-23, the company is in advanced discussions with various network vendors to finalize its strategy for rolling out 5G. The report states that device testing has been completed with all major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) on their upcoming next-generation mobile broadband network.
However, Vodafone Idea is facing significant challenges as it recovers from a severe financial crisis caused by mounting debts. In February 2023, the finance ministry completed a debt-to-equity conversion in Vodafone Idea, converting the company’s Rs 16,133 crore interest dues. As a result, the government now holds a 33.4 percent stake in the company, becoming its largest shareholder. The government’s intervention was aimed at saving the struggling telecom operator and preventing a monopoly in the sector. However, the government does not plan to take over management control of the company.
While Vodafone Idea is nearing the final stages of rolling out its 5G network, the chairman, Ravinder Takkar, has emphasized the company’s commitment to expanding 4G coverage in India. Takkar stated in Vi’s latest annual report that the company will continue investing in expanding 4G coverage and capacity, particularly in its 17 priority circles. The introduction of 5G services will follow once the necessary funding is secured.
