Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh while presiding over the first alumni meet of Gobind Ballabh Pant Memorial government degree college at Rampur today exhorted the students to maintain discipline in educational institutions and said the students should adopt high standards of ethics while studying in colleges and universities. He said that the government would not tolerate indiscipline in any of the educational institution of the state. The education institutions were temples of learning and not creating ruckus and resorting to vandalism and the true spirit of education be maintained at all cost.

Chief Minister said that education means much more than merely acquiring knowledge. It is the acquisition of skills, building character and improving employability.

He said  that there were only 32 students with staff of 35 initially when the college started and also faced criticism from the opposition, but as of today the college has a strength of 3500 and was one of the reputed institute with adequate infrastructure  and well qualified staff. He said that the college would be further strengthened.

Shri Virbhadra Singh said that government has opened as many as 22 colleges during last two and a half years of its regime in the state with a provision of rupees five crores each for them. He said that it was not merely for the sake of announcements and to take credit that the government was announcing colleges but we are committed to build adequate infrastructure and create conducive environment for fostering better education. He said that it had been observed that with opening of colleges, the girls were getting an appropriate benefit and were outnumbering the male counterparts.

Chief Minister said that all around development through education was cherished motto of state government stressing that education was strength to empower the society. Government was also stressing to provide skill development to the youth and had launched Rs 500 crore skill development scheme, providing skill development allowance of Rs 1000 per month to unemployed youth and Rs 1500 per month for persons with disability had proved a boon for local youth, especially in rural areas. Efforts are afoot to cover maximum youth under its ambit. He said that the youth having passed middle school examination and aged between 16 years and 36 years were eligible to avail benefit under this scheme.

He also performed foundation stone laying ceremony of science and commerce block in the college campus to be constructed at the cost Rs 10.60 crore. He also unveiled statues of Goddess Saraswati and Shri Govind Ballabh Pant.

Chief Minister also released a souvenir on this occasion. He also released a book written by Dr. S.S.Patyal. A film on the journey of  the college since its establishment in 1959 was also screened on the occasion.

Chief Parliamentary Secretary Shri Nand Lal appreciated the efforts of the Principal in organising the event and said that the college was providing ample opportunities to the students to develop their outlook through different academic and cu-curricular activities. He urged the Chief Minister to initiate steps for inclusion of college under PG centre so that adequate grant may be made available for this institute.

Principal of the college Shri S.B. Negi while addressing the alumni and other guests on the occasion detailed about the college activities and read the annual report of the college. He demanded to introduce Mass communication in the college and to fill the vacant posts.

Earlier, Chief Minister Shri Virbhadra Singh and other distinguished guests and veteran students of the college were honoured  and welcomed by the principal of the college.
A colourful cultural programme was also presented by the students of the college.

Irrigation and Public Health Minister Smt Vidya Stokes, State Youth Congress President Shri Vikramaditya Singh, District Congress President Shimla Rural Shri K.S.Khachi, Vice –Chairman, HPSIDC Shri Atul Sharma, Chairman, APMC, Kullu Shri Upendar Kant Mishr, President Nagar Parishad Shri Deepak Sood, Chairman MILKFED Shri Brij Lal, PTA President  Shri Rajesh Gupta, Deputy Commissioner Shri Dinesh Malhotra, Superintendent of Police Shimla, Shri D.W.Negi,  Members of Old students Association and SP, Solan Shri Ramesh Chajjta were also present on the occasion amongst others.
