This year, an extraordinary event is set to unfold as we witness the convergence of two monthly Shivratri celebrations within the sacred month of Sawan. As devotees flock to the revered Shiva temples in Devbhoomi, let us delve into the auspiciousness of this divine celebration and learn the essential practices to observe during this holy time.
The Sacred Timing of Shivratri: Nishita Kaal Muhurta for Jalabhishek
During Shivratri, it is of paramount importance to offer Jalabhishek (ablution with sacred water) to Lord Shiva. The ideal time to perform this ritual is during the Nishita Kaal Muhurta, a propitious period designated for Shiva worship. For this year’s Sawan Shivratri, the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha commences from 08:32 minutes on July 15th and concludes at 10:08 minutes on July 16th. Engaging in Jalabhishek during this sacred timeframe amplifies the auspiciousness of the ritual.
The Significance of Sawan: A Month of Spiritual Eminence
The month of Sawan holds great significance in Hindu culture, and this year presents an exceptional occurrence with the convergence of two monthly Shivratri within this auspicious period. Observing Monday fasts, known as Pradosh Vrat, and partaking in the Shivratri celebrations during Sawan are regarded as highly propitious for paying homage to Lord Shiva. On the sacred occasion of Shivratri, while chanting the powerful mantra of “Om Namah Shivay,” it is customary to perform Jalabhishek to Lord Shiva. This act bestows solace and relief from suffering. To worship Lord Shiva in the most befitting manner, gather an assortment of fruits, flowers, sandalwood, bilva patra, dhatura, incense, and a lamp. Prepare Panchamrit by combining milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar, and utilize it to bathe the Shivling, followed by anointing it with water.
Expressions of Devotion: Eight Names of Bholenath
While worshiping Lord Shiva, pay homage to the divine deity by offering flowers and reciting the eight names associated with Him. These names include Bholenath, Bhava, Sharva, Rudra, Pashupati, Ugra, Mahan, Bhima, and Ishaan. Additionally, performing the aarti (ritualistic waving of lamps) and circumambulating the Shiva lingam further intensify the spiritual experience. It is believed that anointing Lord Shiva with milk and offering Belpatra yields twice the divine blessings during worship.
