WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus visited the earthquake-hit city of Aleppo in northern Syria. This raised hopes of more emergency aid reaching Syria in the coming days. On Saturday, 35 tonnes of relief material was delivered to Aleppo by the WHO.

His visit comes in the wake of Monday’s devastating earthquake in Syria that killed 5,000 people in both government and rebel-held areas.

Speaking to reporters during his visit, the WHO director-general said that the easing of US sanctions on Syria within the next 180 days would allow more emergency supplies and aid to arrive.

According to UNHCR estimates, 5.3 million people in Syria may have been left homeless by the earthquake.
